Water Cutback Directive Pushed Back 24 Hours To Let Work Site Dry Out

1:03 PM MONDAY UPDATE – The construction on Malibu’s water main must be delayed 24 hours due to the rain. The order to stop using water – except for drinking and sanitation – will now extend for 24 hours starting at 2PM WED and ending 2PM THURS.

This is for the replacement of the water main that serves the vast majority of Malibu and Topanga Canyon.
Water in the local tanks must be saved for any fires, and to maintain pressure in the system. If the mains were to go dry, boil-water orders and/or chlorination could be ordered.
All work will be delayed 24 hours, to start at 2pm WED, including the closure of one lane of PCH heading towards Malibu, from Chautauqua to nearly Temescal Cyn Rd., county officials told KBUU Radio at 1pm Monday.

Mountain Lion Killed Near Mugu Naval Station Had Deformities Due To Inbreeding

The body of a mountain lion … hit by a car near the Point Mugu Navy Base … will be examined by forensic experts.

P-81 was hit last Friday on PCH near Las Posas Road … near the strawberry fields of Ventura County.

The 4 year old male was an example of inbreeding … a symptom of the lack of access to allow mountain lions to roam in and out of their Santa Monica Mountains habitat.

And he was the second mountain lion to be struck on PCH recently … going the wrong way .. away from suitable habitat.

Last March … a male mountain lion was killed on PCH near Broad Beach.

Since last March … nine mountain lions have been struck and killed by vehicles in the local area.

34 mountain lions have been killed by cars or trucks in the last three years in the Santa Monica Mountains region.

P-81 was captured and tagged in the western Santa Monica Mountains in March 2020.

Experts noted signs of inbreeding – a kinked tail where the end is shaped like the letter “L” and only one descended testicle.

National Park Service biologists say P-81’s abnormalities were the first physical evidence of potential inbreeding depression due to lack of genetic diversity.

They say giving the wild animals a migration path over freeways is critical to prevent road kill .. and further inbreeding.

Construction is underway on the first wildlife overpass on the 101 Freeway at Agoura Hills.

And study is underway on a possible second wildlife crossing … over the 101 Freeway at the Conejo Grade.

That bridge would be six miles from where P-81 got killed crossing PCH … well within the mountain lion’s range of exploring.

Neighbors Blame Short Term Rental For BH-Adjacent Mass Shooting

A mass killing in Benedict Canyon … three killed … another four injured.

And it was at a short term rental … an overnight party house.

Not a big mansion … a modest 2,400-square-foot modern home in what had, in years past, been a quiet, family-friendly neighborhood.

Residents told reporters their former neighbors have recently been renting out many of the homes on that street for overnight use.

The victims are two women from Illinois and one woman from Arizona.

They were in a car in front of the rental house … where a large party had been going on.

Mayor Karen Bass tweeted “This is the 11th mass shooting in the United States and the fourth in California this week.” She then repeated and emphasized in capital letters: THIS. WEEK.

All over California … shootings at short term rentals are raising complaints.

Four people were shot and killed in Inglewood at a short term rental last year.

That prompted Inglewood residents to demand that their city enact rules like in Santa Monica … rules that require overnight rental units to have a host … on premises … to evict people before parties get out of hand.

Santa Monica’s host ordinance was approved by the Coastal Commission … but the same Coastal Commission has voted to strip Malibu of its power to require hosts.

That matter is under negotiation between the city and coastal staff.

PCH Presence Deters Pop-Up Exotic Rally Next To Aviator Nation

Once again … a heavy sheriff’s department presence yesterday morning on P C H in the Civic Center area.

But there were no exotic car gatherings that we could spot.

The week before … a week ago Sunday … dozens of exotics had gathered at Aviator Nation … the former Malibu Inn.

According to a press release that was published … supposedly as a news article in a local newspaper … Aviator Nation had invited them.

The newspaper article … written by a Thousand Oaks area resident …  the road house across for the pier is hoping to establish itself as a regular Sunday venue for exotic car shows.

It is not clear if those are monthly or weekly.

But … no special event permit had been pulled … and it doubtful that the city of Malibu would ever issue one.

Past Coffee and Cars events were actually sponsored by the city … at Bluffs Park.

But they grew out of control … attracting dozens of lawbreaking drivers to Pacific Coast Highway.

Unofficial gatherings moved to the shopping centers on Cross Creek … causing major traffic jams .. unhappy businesses and residents … and hundreds of hours of sheriff’s department enforcement time.

A week ago … dozens of exotics were at Aviator Nation.

And video of the event. … posted by car fans .. showed a heavy sheriffs department presence.

Vehicle after vehicle was getting pulled over by deputies on PCH in front of Aviator Nation for loud cars … missing license plates … or other infractions.

On social media … gear heads howled.

“Why are you slapping the hand that feeds you?” whined one.

“All those owners are paying hundreds of thousands in taxes a year. Keep screwing with them and they will just move to Texas.”

Well…. they are not paying taxes in Malibu … the sales tax on a 5 dollar cup of coffee is

Insert punch line here.

It’s not clear yet if the city has started any enforcement action against Aviator Nation.

Most Malibu residents have been not happy with the car clubs that took over the Civic Center area and other shopping centers.

The Malibu Public Safety Commission meets tomorrow … we expect the issue will come up there … and we’ll have a report on that Wednesday.

Malibu Crime Up 5.9%, As Residential Burglaries Double

Malibu’s yearly crime stats show a 5.9 percent increase in serious crimes.

And much of that can be chalked up to a near-doubling in the number of residential burglaries.

During the year … sheriff’s department officials had said there was a large amount of theft from the numerous construction sites in Malibu … where houses are being rebuilt after the woolsey Fire.

That has caused the number of residential burglaries to go from 25 two years ago … to 49 last year.

The number of thefts from locked vehicles was also up dramatically … about 40 percent.

As we said… The city of Malibu public safety commission meets tomorrow …

And we should get a fleshed out report on the crime situation.

Will have that for you Wednesday.

Bumper Crop Of Incoming Kindergartners Evidenced By Point Dume Roundup

On Point Dume … Malibu Elementary School had its most-attended kindergarten roundup in four years.

Last week …more than 40 people attended.

Principal Chris Hertz tells parents about 20 of the people came for the Transitional Kindergarten class … for four year olds basically ….  That will be started this fall.

Point Dume is starting the TK class for the first time in one of its kindergarten rooms.

Hertz says no decision has been made on the TK class by the school district yet.

As Covid Levels Drop, SMC Drops Mask Requirement

Decreased Covid transmission levels in California are allowing Santa Monica College to drop its mask requirements.

As of today … Santa Monica College will only require masks to be worn in one on one meetings in individual offices.

Also .. on college transportation or in the student health center.

Malibu’s schools require negative Covid tests every Monday … but there are no blanket mask orders in effect right now.

The number of COVID-positive patients in Los Angeles County hospitals has fallen below 700.

That’s the lowest rate since mid-November.

92 of those people were being treated in intensive care, up eight from the previous day’s total.

On Friday … another 19 people died because of Covid … bringing the L-A County death toll to  35,230.
