Electric ratepayers across Southern California will pay a little bit less to clean up the defunct San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station … 75 miles down the coast for Malibu.

The California Public Utilities Commission yesterday trimmed $775 million off the amount that’s going to be stuck to ratepayers.

Cleaning up the nuke plant Will cost $4.7 billion dollars.

Southern California Edison and the CPUC made a secret deal to stick $3.3 billion of that cost to the ratepayers.

Lawyers representing utility customers challenged that secret 2014 agreement.

They pointed out that the expensive nuclear plant had been ruined by Southern California Edison designs … when the company supersized the nuclear steam generators during a rebuild 15 years ago.

The super sizing of the nuclear core caused the twin generators to literally shake themselves to pieces.

Edison had planned to use the surplus of electricity to be generated by the large plant to meet electricity shortage that never developed.

Instead of ratepayers paying 3.3 billion … ratepayers will not pay about $2.4 billion to retire and cleanup the nuclear power plant at San Onofre,

It’s not a done deal.

Anyone who wants to has 10 days to challenge it.
