LA Times: Deputies Are Forming Secret Societies, Sheriff Worries

Written by on July 27, 2018

The Los Angeles Times reports at the Los Angeles County sheriffs department may have another problem with its deputies forming secret societies.

The newspaper reports that deputies at some stations have admitted to be members of a secret club … and have mark their bodies with skull logos.

The Times reports that some of those deputies have been involved in fatal shootings.

Watchdogs say that is worrisome … given the department’s long history of secret societies that promote excessive force.

The secret societies in law enforcement have also enforced a code of silence.

Sheriff Jim McDonnell was elected in 2014 on a promise to reform a corrupt agency.

He faces a reelection campaign this year that may hinge on how well he is reforming the sheriffs office.

McDonnell is in effect the city of Malibu’s police chief … as our city is one of many in Los Angeles County that have turned over police responsibilities to the sheriffs office.

McDonnell told the LA Times and we quote … “Renegade cliques erode public confidence as well as internal morale, and they will not be tolerated within the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.”
