Homelessness Task Force Delays Report For One Month To Draft A Preamble

It al builds down to where to put a sleeping location for Malibu homeless people.

Malibu’s Homelessness Task Force is putting finishing touches on a lengthy report … for the city council … a broad strategic plan for dealing with people living on the streets … at the bus benches … and on the beaches.

The task force is ten Malibu residents with broadly differing views.

And they disagreed this week … on how to present their report to the city council.

Languages that has been hashed out in the recommendation calls for looking for a shelter or safe parking site … first in Malibu … then outside the malibu city limits.

But some tasks force members … like Scott Ditrich … said they wanted it pout right up front … at the start of the document. … that the homelsss sleeping location paid for by Malibu city taxpayers should not be inside the city of Malibu,.

Scott Dittrich wanted the report to say right up front … that the city should find an appropriate Alternative Sleeping Location outside the city.

NEWSCART A7321XX HTF SCOTT DITTRICK

“I really wanted to be definite if we don’t have any in the city we’re gonna fall apart and everybody’s gonna argue and fight and they’ll put it to a vote and we won’t get anything done.”

But Paul Davis … a volunteer who has worked with Malibu homeless … argued that the task Force’s recommendation is more nuanced than that.

NEWSCART A73195 HTF PAUL DAVIS

:” I wouldn’t put that in the strategy document. I wouldn’t be narrower than our ASL recommendation. I would favor at most mimicking the language that we have in the recommendation.”

The report and its recommendations are a carefully crafted set of agreements between homeless advocates from here in Malibu … and those who say it’s time to recognize economic and political realities … and set up sleeping and care facilities outside this expensive zip code.

The report will go back for some language changes by city staff … and come back to the Homelessness Task Force next month.

SMC Rolling Out Survey Soon: What Does Malibu Want At Malibu College?

Officials from Santa Monica College met with the City of Malibu yesterday … making general plans to make specific plans.

After 20 years of planning and construction … the Malibu branch campus is nearing completion.

Surveys and outreach meetings are planned to find out exactly what programs and classes should be offered at the Malibu campus.

There was a meeting yesterday between college officials and two city council members … as well as city staff.

And the first question that came up from City Manager Steve McClary … does the Malibu College building have a place to show movies???

NEWSCART A73192 SMCMALIBU

MCCLARY: “We’ve heard a lot of folks in the community who are looking for locations where they can show movies… Those type of events

DEAN: “I too have heard that request from the community and I can imagine that that’s a very viable solution for that type of request. “

That second voice was Bradley Dean …vice president for academic affairs at Santa Monica College … talking about the 96 seat lecture hall.

The Malibu Film Society has been searching for a new home.

The large group was founded when the Malibu Cinema closed …. and had been quite popular.

The Malibu Film Society lost its longstanding home at the Malibu Jewish Center and Synagogue when an entrepreneur running a competing organization complained that the Jewish Center was not zoned to show movies.

Plans to move the Film Society to another location … the Malibu Pacific Church … are on hold as Councilman Bruce Silverstein … who lives near that church … says neighbors may object.

Getting back to the Malibu college campus … it’s set to open in eight months,

That’s delayed one month due to Covid quarantines last year.

Assistant Dean Bradley Dean said yesterday that the college is reaching out now .. to hear what Malibu wants.

NEWSCART A73193 SMCMALIBU 222

“We’re trying to understand from individuals if they have enrolled at Santa Monica College in the past… and if so … for what educational goals?

“How likely are they or a member of their family is to enroll in a class at SMC in the next few years… and what type of educational goal that we could help them achieve whether it’s that’s completing a credit paced degree or certificate … taking a non-credit class… taking an emeritus class – which is our noncredit program for older adults –  life-long learning?

“Or taking a community class that’s more about personal enrichment or professional development?”

The survey will be publicized when it goes out later this spring.

And the college building … at Malibu’s long-standing request … includes a new Malibu sheriff’s station.

With a small jail.

Until 20 years ago … Malibu had a sheriff’s station …. most recently at the same spot where the college building is rising.

Also at the college building … an emergency operations center for the City of Malibu … next door to the sheriff’s station.

In addition to the surveys going out on the Internet soon … the college plans community forums in May and October,

Caltrans Switches On 87 Year Old Tunnel

Good news on the Caltrans front.

State workers and contractors have switched on the lights in the McClure Tunnel … the 87-year-old tunnel that links Pacific Coast Highway to what is now the Santa Monica Freeway… Interstate 10.

And boy are they bright… Reports KBUU unit 2.

The lights are part of a project to modernize the curving tunnel and its approaches… The scene of numerous rear-end crashes and other vehicular mayhem.

Caltrans is planning to put in electric warning signs that will light up when traffic stops or slows just beyond the tunnel… giving drivers a heads up to slow down.

Other parts of this project include a speed feedback sign … a high-friction surface treatment to the pavement inside the tunnel … and an upgrade to overhead signage in the project area.

This is the latest Caltrans effort to improve safety in the tunnel.

And it’s costing 6 point 3 million dollars … just for the electrical work.

Malibu residents may remember the electric lights of 10 years ago … installed on the center median … kind of. a Christmas light arrangement.

That safety improvement lasted about 6 months before they lights wiring fell apart.

Another improvement 10 years ago or so saw the state put in new overhead signs on the freeway that were way too small…

It took more than a year to get those replaced with the signs that are there now.

Oxnard Spiffs Up, Starbucks Bumps Out Burger Joint

Is Oxnard getting more LA?

The area around the 101 freeway at Oxnard Boulevard is dramatically different … as a series of huge projects are coming on line,

Multistory apartment buildings with underground garages have replaced the rough and tumble roadside hotels at wagon wheel.

Subdivisions are eating up the Strawberry Fields just north of the 101.

The shopping center with the Whole Foods Market and numerous high-end retailers is a big attraction now.

And now comes news that the Wendy’s drive-in on Vineyard Avenue is going to bite the dust. A drive-through Starbucks has been approved… According to the Ventura county star. Goodbye old Oxnard … we knew you well.

State AG Warns Californians: Do Not Drink Sunscreen

Finally this morning … do not drink sunscreen to prevent skin damage.

That’s the message from California Attorney General Robb Bonta… Is he announced a legal cease and desist agreement with a company that had come up with a “drinkable sunscreen.” The attorney general put out a statement yesterday saying that a product called UVO … a drinkable sunscreen … was bogus.

UVO was canned by a company down in Yorba Linda called Dermatology Industries Incorporated.

They had said in their marketing that drinking the stuff provided “3-5 hours of sun protection from head to toe including your eyes.”

The AG called BS.

The company had no comment when an Associated Press reporters asked them about the legal agreement.

Says the state A-G … quote …”you’ve got to wear your sunscreen, not drink it.”
