This is Malibu’s Only Local Daily News … the Monday edition … I’m Hans Laetz reporting.

Small Quake Bumps Malibu Channel

A magnitude 2.9 earthquake hit off the Malibu coast this morning at 2 minutes after 9.

The epicenter was off the coast ….about 9 miles off of Point Dume.

Rain Possible In 7 or 8 Days

Gusty northwest to north winds will continue through this morning, especially across the mountains. High pressure will build on Monday through Wednesday leading to a significant warm up with record high temperatures possible.

A cool down is expected late week into the weekend as high pressure weakens.

And rain may arrive next Monday or Tuesday … right now the prediction is 1/2 inch to 1 inch.

Median Scraped Off PCH At Trancas Creek Bridge

Construction is underway this morning … real  construction .. at the Trancas Creek bridge on PCH.

One lane in in each direction today… As the center concrete median is being chiseled out.

Traffic is about to be shoved over to one side of the bridge… All four lanes will be scrunched together in the bike lane and sidewalk will be eliminated.

Signs are already up telling Bicycle us to get off their bikes… Cross over to the southern side of the highway… And use a new walkway to cross Trancas Creek.

Those signs are premature … and frankly deadly.

The new walkway has not been installed yet… And the Guernsey intersection where Bicycle is supposed to cross does not have a signal installed. That is supposedly coming. Apparently the guys who put up the signs are a bit ahead of schedule.

Same story for the speed limit 30 signs… Those went up a week ago and were widely ignored… Of course. Just like when Caltrans dropped the speed limit to 30 miles an hour and scrunched up the lanes at Escondido Canyon… It’s not hard to predict rear enders and sideswipes are in the cards at Trancas.

And injured bicycles are also a hallmark of construction project.

As for the construction schedule … no more major work is scheduled until the end of April.  That’s when lanes will be scrunched over to the oceanside half of the bridge … and the land side of the structure will be demolished and replaced.

A Weekend Full Of Stupid And Dangerous Crashes And Driving

Another weekend … more fast cars … more stupid crashes.

It was Friday night when a car … witnesses said it has been going over 80 miles an hour … slammed into the back of another car.

This was eastbound on PCH … east of Sunset Boulevard.

That other car had just pulled out of a parking place along PCH near Gladstone’s restaurant … in Pacific Palisades.

One car ended up teetering on the rocks … at the water’s edge.

City of Los Angeles police brought in a chopper to look for its driver ….and two people … wet … were taken into custody down the beach.

That’s according to CBS Los Angeles … which had their chopper overhead.

Earlier that afternoon… a speeding car on the wrong side of the road caused a head-on crash at Deer Creek … west of Neptunes Net.

One person was trapped inside a car … and Ventura County firefighters had to cut the top of it off and pry apart the wreckage to get that person out.

That person was flown to a hospital by a Ventura County sheriff’s paramedic rescue chopper.

PCH was closed from Mugu Rock to Neptune’s Net for more than an hour.

And we are getting late word this morning  … of a serious crash on PCH at Encinal Canyon just after midnight this morning.

That’ll be about a mile and a half or 2 miles west of Trancas.

A helicopter was brought in to rescue out one person.

Street Takeover Results In Gun Pulled During Driving Stunt

And speaking of felony stupid … Los Angeles police have posted video of a Tesla that went airborne … way up in the air … going down a steep hill near Dodger Stadium.

It’s not clear what is stupider … the felony clown behind the wheel of the rented Tesla ..,. the morons cheering him on … or the police posting the video to give the guy fame.

This is what city streets are turning into  … late at night … as a generation raised on Fast and Furious movies takes over streets and PCH.

Last night at midnight another intersection in south-central Los Angeles was taken over by drivers going in circles. Los Angeles police were prevented from arriving at the scene by a blockade of cars and onlookers. Video shows at least one weapon was pulled as cars spun in circles… a circus of lawbreaking and danger.

The background level of stupid driving …. Proudly stupid … is rising dramatically …

That’s what CHP officers and sheriff’s deputies tell us.

PCH Blocked To Bring Attention To Imminent Starvation Of A People

A faraway war … a genocide of an entire people … is underway in Africa.

And that was brought home to Pacific Coast Highway in Santa Monica on Saturday.

The highway between Malibu and the outside world was blocked for several hours Saturday afternoon.

About 75 protestors had a Santa Monica police escort as they moved down the California Incline and onto PCH.

Video of the march … shot by Santa Monica Close Up .. shows the police barricaded the incline with cars and a riot line …. To try to keep the marchers off the highway.

But PCH was eventually closed at Entrada….

The genocide is in the Tigre province of Ethiopia.

500 days of Civil War in Ethiopia has left thousands dead, forced more than two million people from their homes and deprived food from millions of people.

The Ethiopian military, ethnic militias and troops from neighboring Eritrea are fighting to oust the Tigray People’s Liberation Front from its stronghold in the northern region of Tigray.

On Saturday … the starvation of the Tigre people was brought onto Pacific coast Highway.

The marchers were up on the Palisades … but then they blocked traffic and marched down California Incline towards PCH.

At first … police prevented the marchers from entering PCH lanes.

Then … Santa Monica police closed the westbound freeway at Fourth Street … and closed eastbound PCH at Entrada.

At that point … 75 marchers and a sound truck moved onto the highway.,

Mavo Mubares

PCH traffic was blocked for more than an hour … then the protestors thanked Santa Monica police and walked back up the Incline.

State Water Project Cuts Delivery To 5%, What Does That Mean For Malibu?

He may be hearing on the news that the state water project is slashing its water deliveries to 5% of normal.

Does that affect Malibu?

Not yet… But it will.

The state water project runs the California aqueduct… Which brings water from the Sacramento river delta over to mountain ranges to the Los Angeles region.

Those are the deliveries that are being curtailed.

Malibu gets its drinking water from a complicated web of agencies.

Our water is delivered by LA County waterworks district 29.

District 29 buys 100% of its water from a wholesaler called the West basin municipal water district.

West basin gets its water from three sources, about one third each.

Those sources are the state water project… The Colorado river… And ground water from the Los Angeles basin.

These days… That ground water is mostly reclaimed treated and cleaned sewage effluent from LA.

As the drought gets worse… the amount of state water coming over the mountains from Sacramento river is declining.

The amount of water from the Colorado river is declining. West basin has now decided against building a desalinization plant. That’s leaving us more and more dependent on the reclaimed water that’s being pumped out of the Los Angeles basin.

West Basin municipal water has not yet imposed water consumption restrictions for us… But it appears that that is just a matter of time.

Planning Commission To Delve Into City Hall Overload

The issue of overloaded city departments will be discussed at the Malibu Planning Commission tonight.

Between the demands of a city that lost more than 10% of its housing to a fire … and a pandemic disease that has sent workers home for much of two years… There are reports that City Hall is swamped. The planning department… And the building inspectors… Are reportedly overwhelmed by some people trying to get permits for their houses. Planning commission say applications for five hotels… Plus the large commercial development being built on Civic Center Way… are exacerbating the problems.

And there is reportedly great turnover in staff inside City Hall… With experienced planners leaving for better jobs elsewhere… That don’t demand a commute into Malibu… Or dealing with demanding Malibu landowners. Just how bad is the problem? Or is it a problem of perception? The matter gets discussed by the planning commission when it meets tonight on the computers on the computers at 6:30.

Chumash and Enviros Oppose Windmills Close to Vandenberg Shore

In news from up the coast … a large swell of opposition is developing against the installation of energy generating windmills off the coast of Santa Barbara County. No it’s not Donald Trump. This time it’s a group of environmentalist… And Native American activists… Who opposed to the electric generation windmills.

A story in the Los Angeles Times today says that Native American groups and environmental organizations are opposed to two energy companies that want to install windmills right off the coast of Vandenberg space force base.

The energy companies want to install eight floating windmills about 2 1/2 miles offshore.

This would been water owned by the State of California … and it’s not the same project that has been proposed by the Biden administration for much further offshore… up the coast.

The federal proposal is for a fleet of windmills more than 20 miles off the coast of Big Sur… Out of sight from the coastline and supposedly far enough out to sea as to protect birds.

The two companies however proposed turbines just 2 1/2 miles off the coast…

The Northern Chumash Tribe is bitterly opposed to the state project.

The LA Times reports that the network of eight floating energy generating windmills and undersea cables would be an affront to the Chumash culture.

And they are joined in opposition by the federal government… The California coastal commission… And central coast commercial fisherman.

Also opposing the near-shore windmills are the Surfrider Foundation … the Sierra Club … the Center for Biological Diversity and a host of other environmental groups.

And … one would presume … Donald Trump.

Malibu’s Board Street To Santa Barbara and LA Grand Central Market

Malibu’s Broad Street Oyster Co. is spreading up and down the coast.

The Malibu eatery started as a popup in the Malibu Village shopping center … at Cross Creek.

Broad Street founder Christopher Tompkins stated selling oysters at hipster hangouts in LA five years ago.

Then … a burger joint went out of business at Cross Creek and Broad Street set up a temporary pop up.

“Fast-forward to today … “ Tompkins tells a Santa Barbara newspaper … and he has 70 employees between his restaurants in Malibu and Santa Barbara.

Board Street will next open a new location … in Downtown LA’s historic Grand Central Market … early this summer.

The L A Eater website reports that a new stall is a rare thing at the 103-year-old Grand Central Market.
