‘Hold The Salt’ – Enviros Blast Bu Desal Talks

Written by on May 15, 2018

Controversy is brewing over a proposed ocean water desalination plant … proposed by the water agency that supplies water to Malibu.

The West Basin Municipal Water District is the agency proposing to build the desal plant near El Porto Beach … near El Segundo and Manhattan Beach.

It would supply about 11 percent the water used in Malibu and several other cities in western LA County.

Advocates say the new water source would increase the overall water supply reliability, local control and drought resiliency in the region.

But it would cost 380 million dollars .…

It would use a lot of energy … and dump the salt back into Santa Monica Bay.

It is opposed – therefore – by several environmental groups including LA water keeper … heal the Bay and the Surfrider foundation.

Attorney Melissa Kelly says San Diego has built a desalination plant … and learned a costly lesson.

The project came in way over budget … and the ratepayers are locked into paying for it.

even though they’ve conserved enough water to make that desal plant unnecessary.

NEWSCART 77556 DESAL KELLY QQQ RESTORE OUR GROUNDWATER

“We think first you should should reduce, which is conservation.

“You should re-use, which is stormwater capture.

“Recycle, that’s wastewater.

“And you can restore, which is brackish groundwater.

“ Essentially, you can deal brackish groundwater.”

The Malibu city council may join in Manhattan Beach in opposing the project …

Environmentalists asked the city council last night to study the matter closely …

and the city council agreed to look into the measure at a future meeting.
