SMMUSD Will Vote On Reopening Protocols Thursday

Written by on September 21, 2020

The number of COVID 19 cases in the local area is static.

113 positive cases in the Santa Monica Mountains.

Within city limits … still 101.

The Santa Monica Malibu school district will decide on how to reopen schools … at a special board meeting Thursday.

Last week …. there was a public hearing for the board to hash out the options.

This came after the district .. frankly … screwed up a parent survey earlier this month.

Superintendent Ben Drati withdrew the survey … saying it the survey caused undue alarm among some parents.

Drati says the survey did not clarify that reopening options will only be considered once the County clears the next stage of reopening.

The survey was withdrawn … Drati plans to release a new one … what he calls a clearer format … at some later date.

Learning at home … over the internet … remains an option under all contingencies.

The question will be …. how to handle students whose parents want them to return to the classrooms.

Every California school district is required to submit a Learning Continuity and Attendance Plan by Sept. 30th.

But no classrooms can be reopened until teachers approve of the plan … under state rules.

Drati plans to release details on his various reopening scenarios … sometime this week.

And nothing can change L-A County passes from the “purple” tier of COVID-19 transmission into the “red” tier.

That means the L A countywide case rate has to drop below 7 positive cases per 100 thousand residents for fourteen consecutive days.

We’re almost there … but the anticipated Labor Day bulge of new cases is expected to hit the test centers this week.
