SMMUSD Reminds Parents Of Truancy Laws: Register Your Home School

Written by on September 1, 2020

Santa Monica-Malibu school officials are warning parents that they cannot simply pull their kids out of school and declare that they are homeschooling.

Superintendent Ben Drati sent a letter out yesterday … noting that the Coronavirus pandemic has caused more parents to homeschool their children.

Drati says that a “Private School Setting” … which is not part of a district-approved  Independent Study or Distance Learning option … is not necessarily legal.

Stare law prohibits truancy.

And Drati says the district has a responsibility to verify compulsory education for students residing in the district’s boundaries.

If parents elect not to participate in Distance Learning … or the Independent Study classes offered to high school kids … parents must register for an existing online virtual public school, a private school, or a public charter school. More information is available from the school district.
