Santa Monica Could Possibly Throw Out School Board

Written by on November 23, 2018

In news from down the coast … Malibu lawyer Kevin Shenkman has won his lawsuit against the City of Santa Monica.

A Superior Court judge last week ruled against the city … and said it has to implement district voting … for city council.

This might affect the Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District … as the city charter of Santa Monica controls the school board and the way it elects board members.

Right now … the seven school board members  our elected districtwide.

Attorneys for the plaintiffs in the voting rights lawsuit convinced Superior Court Judge Yvette M. Palazuelos to order candidates to be elected by district and to prohibit any further at-large elections.

Judge Palazuelos has already ruled that the City had deliberately discriminated against minority voters by refusing to implement district elections

The plaintiffs are now asking the judge to order new elections for Santa Monica city Council in April.

And the city council may impose District voting on the Santa Monica Malibu school district at the same time.

But the City of Santa Monica has said it plans to appeal and last week asked the judge to clarify her two-page decision.

All of this – we confess – is conjecture.

We will follow up ….
