Skateboard Park Opens With Very Few Masks, City Says Rules Allow That

Written by on July 6, 2020

Malibu’s skateboard park opened on Friday.

A large crowd about 40 people at midday.

All of the adults … there to watch their kids … they all had masks on.

Very few of the kids had masks on.

City community services director Jesse Bobbett.

“So you can actually be skating without a mask, so that’s the rule and our rules are over here.

“You are to have 11 when you are lined up or coming into the skate park but when you’re actually skating in the park you can not have a face mask on”

Hear that in the background??

Kids having fun.

Great fun.

And who can blame them?

Cooped up for 4 months … waiting for a skatepark to open in Malibu their entire lives.

The county rules … enforced by the city … do not require masks to be worn during exercise.

Bicyclists … joggers and others are not supposed to wear masks … unless they are close to other people.

And Friday … there is no question that people were very close to each other.

Some lined up for a shoulder to shoulder picture at the new ramps … just as we were interviewing Bobbett.

“I understand this is an opening this is just us getting the skate park open we are having some people show and we’re trying to be reasonable and a lot of them have been wearing masks so as we get timed up with reservations coming in you will see it’s a different scene it’ll only be people in here it will be a little bit different than without the parents and the councilmen and all of that.”

No question …. the kids using the ramps were ecstatic.

And so were the parents …. many of whom were skateboard kids themselves 25 years ago when city leaders first began promising a skateboard park in malibu.

Teh aprk is open … with advance reservations.

12 skateboarders at any given time.

Social distancing rules enforced … except while skating.
