Sand Washes Out At Surfrider, Adamson House Loses Outer Structure

Written by on June 7, 2019

A 10-foot-high sand cliff lines Surfrider Beach … next to the Adamson House … and the iconic museum’s outdoor beach sand showers have fallen into the ocean.

Two weeks of large surf and strong winds … plus the Malibu Creek meandering towards the ocean right next to the Adamson House … are taking their toll.

An old barge anchorage .. a dock and other Adamson artifacts dating from the 1920s have been unearthed … as much of the beach has washed away.

The lifeguard station now has a 10 foot scarp right in front of it.

Surfer Josh Farberow yesterday surveyed the scene ….

WALLFALL AAA

“Well we’re looking at a lot of sand (has) left the speech, and the erosion has cut its way already within a couple of feet of the East End of the Mlibu wall.

REPORTER: “Yeah that’s like a 10 foot scarp there?”

“Yeah definitely and I think for this time of year it’s pretty unheard of.”

The waves have damaged an outdoor shower deck next to the Adamson House … another palm treee has fallen over … state crews were removing the deck for stroage.

Parks superintnedant Craig Sap says there is no immediate danger … the state is coming up with a plan.

SAP WALLFALL

At this point it’s just going to be study work.

the sea wall it’s not really a TRUE seawall it’s more of a bulkhead that kind of surrounds the ground adjacent to the beach area.

Others are worried.

There are many factions of surfers very protective of the world surfing heritage site.

Some are still furious that the state deepened Malibu Lagoon … and they blame that for the beach erosion.

Others … like Josh Farberow … have been trying to convince State Parks to use shovels to move the creek flow to the ocean further away from the Adamson House.

WALLFALL BBB
We acknowledge that this is not just the lagoon, its also sea level rise most likely.

But we are deinately lookinng for some tyope of longe term management.

There seems to be q pretty major disconnect between State parks, Beaches and harbors, the lieguards for what they can do

We really appreciate everyone trying but everyone is kind of taking a hands off approach to this, let nature take it’s course. Unfortunately natures been altered  for about 100 years in this area, with the lagoon with the watershed up creek, with the watershed, the dam, so that we’re just looking for a way to protect this beach so it’s here on 100 years to come.

The 10 foot high sand cliff is dangerous … lifeguard are shooing kids away from it.

The sand may wash back in this summer.

But the ocean has reclaimed the nice sandy beach that had been there for a hundred years … returning the shoreline to where it was when the Adamsons built their oceanfront home.
