Nobu Gets Cease And Desist Order: City Tells Them To Unclog PCH

Written by on May 16, 2019

After years of thumbing its nose at city regulations … and clogging Pacific Coast Highway with valets parking cars off the property … Nobu has been ordered to cease and desist.

The trendy restaurant faces possible revocation of its city permits … which could theoretically lead to its closure.

In a cease and desist order released by the city yesterday … city zoning enforcement officers said “the Nobu operation has consistently violated (city) requirements and refused to bring the operation into compliance, despite numerous warnings and the efforts of the City.”

The formal letter says that its effort over a year to work with the restaurant’s owners on a solution … the owners continue to allow “significant nuisance issues generated by the property” to continue.

The city set a deadline of 10 days ago for the restaurant to come up with a plan to fix the violations … a deadline that Nobu has ignored.

Te enforcemrnt letter notes that Nobu is required to ensure that no vehicles line up on Pacififc Coast Highway waiting to get onto the parking lot.

the city has strongly suggested that a “Lot Full” sign be placed in the entrance to the parking lot when it is full to reduce traffic jams. .

But the biggest violation is Nobu’s use of valets to park vehicles at nearby office buildings on the other side of P C H…

The parking of vehicles offsite is not authorized by the Permits.

An attorney for Nobu says they were surprised by the city’s cease and desist order.

They produced a traffic engineer’s report that claims the city’s plan … to ban left turns to and from the parking lot … is dangerous and creates safety issues for all drivers in the area.

The lawyer claims .. inaccurately … that the letter does not indicate a single violation of any provision of any of Nobu’s entitlements … or Malibu’s Municipal Code.

Malibu has put Nobu on notice repeatedly that it is not allowed to use valets to park cars up and down P C H … effectively spreading its business onto the state hgihway and affecting scads of people in cars every day.

The matter will come to a head next Monday… at the Planning Commission meeting.
