California State Parks Schedules Workshop for Aug. 20 on Huge Malibu Projects: Rindge Dam And Surfrider Beach

With only two weeks notice … the state of California has suddenly scheduled a public workshop to reveal major projects planned for Malibu Creek in the heart of the city.

Specifics about the removal of Rindge Dam … the issue of dirt and rocks clogging the Malibu Creek bed in central Malibu … and the condition of the sand at Surfrider Beach.

Here major … contentious issues in Malibu … as California State Parks plans a gigantic project affecting all three.

The state will reveal its current studies … its plans for the future removal of Rindge Dam … in two weeks.

Wednesday at 6 at Pepperdine University … the state of California will host a community workshop on what they are calling the Malibu Creek Ecosystem Restoration Project.

That night … the project team will present the current design and engineering

work and alternatives being considered for removal of Rindge Dam.

The 100 year-old damn up Malibu Canyon has completely filled up with silt… Sand and dirt…

The state wants to remove the dam and truck that sediment out… With much of it designated to restore the beach down at Surfrider beach.

Thousands of trucks would take the same to Ventura Harbor… Where it would be loaded on the barges to be shipped down to Surfrider Beach.

The second half of the August 20th workshop will be what they call a “focused discussion” on the surf break at Surfrider Beach.

A surf impact assessment study and modeling process will be revealed.

This is sure to be a major controversy.

Te amount of sand in the creekbed threatens to clog up the creek and cause flooding in the Serra Estates and Cross Creek Road neighborhoods every year.

Surfrider Beach is a world surfing heritage sight … fiercely protected by tribes of surfers who often argue with State Parks and with each other.

20 years ago… California state parks set off a lightning storm of unhappiness and division in Malibu … when it started to rebuild the Malibu Lagoon.

Some Malibu surfers supported it.

Others were infuriated and predicted all kinds of horrible consequences.

The Lagoon restoration project is widely regarded as a complete success.

But the problem of starvation at Surfrider Beach continues … as does the fact that the 100 year-old damn does nothing other than block the migration of endangered salmon to their breeding grounds.

With just two weeks notice… This major big reveal of the plan comes as many will be on vacation in August.

And the state is not releasing details of what will be discussed in advance… preferring instead to do a “big reveal.”

Again… the major meeting will be in just two weeks… August 20… at 6pm at Pepperdine University.
