Malibu District Foe Wins Re-Election to SMMUSD Board

Written by on November 4, 2020

The most anti-Malibu-school-district school board member has coasted to re-election.

Maria Leon Vazquez has consistently opposed Malibu independence from Santa Monica.

Leon Vazquez won election to her sixth term … in a crowded field of 8 candidate seeking three seats on the Santa Monica Malibu school board.

Also winning … Jon Kean … who is regarded as slightly more reasonable about letting Malibu out of thr Santa Monica dominated district.

One of the more pro-Malibu school board members from Santa Monica was no ton the board ballot … and is leaving the board.

Oscar de la Torre tired to run for Santa Monica city council.

And he just missed winning …. de la Torre is about one third of a percent short …. about 400 seats.

His longtime seat on the Santa Monica-Malibu school board goes to Jennifer Smith.

She was endorsed by AMPS … the malibu school parents group.

And Smith was also endorsed by Craig Foster … the lone Malibu representative on the Santa Monica board.

Jon Kean … Maria Leon-Vazquez and Jennifer Smith all comfortably won.

Worth noting is the candidate who finished last.

A woman named Dhun May ran on a platform of removing WiFi and other electronic devices from classrooms and school campuses.

May finished with just 6.5 percent of the vote … in tech savvy Santa Monicra and Malibu.
