LAX Arrivals From COVID-19 Hot Zone Will Get Trip Thru Malibu To Mugu Navy Base Quarantine

Written by on February 24, 2020

Americans arriving at L A X — who have travelled in areas where coronavirus is spreading … are possibly going to be driven through Malibu to a quarantine station being set up at Point Mugu.

The federal Department of Health and Human Services and the Defense Department are setting up the Point Mugu Naval Base as a quarantine station.

The federal government announced this late yesterday.

American travelers coming through Los Angeles International Airport might be quarantined at Point Mugu in an abundance of caution.

They would be housed at the Navy base and monitored for symptoms of COVID-19 – the   corona virus.

Any travelers housed at the Point Mugu base would be monitored for signs of infection and transferred to hospitals if symptoms developed.

Washington put out a statement yesterday that Point Mugu is one of many sites determined to be suitable for travelers requiring quarantine.

We’ll read from that statement

“At this time, the Department of Health and Human Services is preparing this site should it be needed in the rapidly evolving public health response.

“Any actions that HHS takes, working with federal, state, tribal and local partners to address this public health emergency, are being done in a way that protects both those quarantined and other citizens as well.

“Imported cases of COVID-19 from a small number of travelers have been detected in the U.S. but this virus is NOT currently spreading in U.S. communities and the immediate risk of this new virus to the American public is believed to be low at this time.”

That was the federal government’s statement about the use of Point Mugu as a COVI-19 quarantine station.

Base personnel were also told today that all the quarantined people will be U S citizens …. all of them will have been tested multiple times for COVID-19 … and all of them will have to be negative results.

If any get sick … they will immediately be removed to a hospital … base commander Captain Jeff Chism told the base personnel and dependents today … in a letter obtained by KBUU News.

Navy officials have scheduled a Community Info Session for Navy personnel and dependents … on the base … tonight.

The general public is not invited.

The Point Mugu base is 18 miles up the coast from Trancas.

The direct route between LAX and the base goes through Malibu.
