The city of Malibu’s historic ban on the sale, distribution and use of single-use plastic straws, plastic stirrers and plastic cutlery within the City goes into effect Friday.

The city has provided a box of environmentally safe paper straws to each local food service business.

The paper straws carry the city’s “Keep it Clean Malibu” slogan.

The city has also been working with businesses to show that many sustainable, reusable straws and cutlery options available in metal, wood, glass, bamboo and other materials.

The City is offering the public a free, reusable smoothie-size steel straw — with a cleaner —carrying the “Keep It Clean Malibu” slogan.

The metal straws are being handed out to anyone who comes to City Hall and then posts a photo on their social media account with the hashtags #keepitcleanmalibu and #strawlessocean.

And Malibu’s straw ban is having impact around the world … and in Sacramento.

But up there … it has been considerably watered down.

The state Assembly yesterday approved a proposed law that would require sit-down restaurants to stop automatically providing disposable plastic straws with drinks unless customers request them.

Assemblyman Ian Calderon … a Democrat from inland L A County … described his bill as a “small step, but in the right direction.”

But Republcians are seeking to make the Malibu straw ban a statewide symbol of government overrreach.

One gubernatorial candidate is campaigning statewide … against it.

And Huntington Beach Republican Assemblyman Matthew Harper opposed the watered down bill

He says it would make it harder for restaurants to do business in California.

Instead of passing a law regulating restaurants, he says the Legislature should impose harsher punishments for people who litter.

Yeah, because that has worked do well.

The watered-down straw request bill …  A-B 18-84 … still requires approval from the state Senate and governor before it can become law.
