50 years ago this week … Los Angeles County started a novel project.

They decided that firefighters should be given medical training … a new concept called paramedics.

Until then there was no such thing.

Ambulance drivers … some of them working for mortuaries … practice what they called scoop and run … and raised on stabilized patients to emergency rooms.

The creation of a county Emergency Medical Services was a radical departure.

The ambulance companies called socialism … as some of them fought bitterly.

LA County’s E M S system now incorporates private ambulances in a partnership with the county fire paramedics.

The L A County “9-11” system utilizes more than 18,000 certified EMS personnel.

They work for fire departments, law enforcement, ambulance companies, hospitals, and private organizations.

The Los Angeles County Fire Museum tomorrow, is hosting the 50th anniversary celebration of EMS in Los Angeles County; one of the first and largest EMS systems in the nation and a recognized leader in pre-hospital care.
