And finally this morning … the Santa Monica school district headquarters has decided that Point Dume Marine Sciences Elementary School needs a new name.

This … as the pending closure of Juan Cabrillo Elementary will apparently mark an end to the Point Dume school’s status as a marine sciences magnet school.

A little history here …

The Point Dume neighborhood school was actually closed down … in the late 80s … due to declining student population.

But then in the 1990s … Juan Cabrillo reached capacity again and the point school was reopened.

But it needed more students to be viable … so a special marine sciences magnet program was created and the school was given a special name.

A special name that the district wants to jettison now.

Because Point Dume Elementary School would be too obvious …  the dsitrict has created a special task force to create a new name.

Students … residents and just about every special interest group are included.

Our suggestion …. Malibu Independent Elementary School at Point Dume… will probably get rejected.
