  • =   And we have 7 days of rain … sometimes heavy … in the forecast.
  • =   A Point Dume resident dies of smoke from the Woolsey Fire.
  • =   And across the state … furious opposition to preemptive power shutoffs.

This is Malibu’s only local daily news. It’s the   ((((  time  ))) edition of the (((  day ))) news … from Radio Malibu  …. F-M 99 point 1 K B U U. Good morning … I’m Hans Laetz reporting.

——

The ancient traffic signals on Pacific Coast Highway at Las Flores Canyon Road are back in service.

Traffic was jammed all morning …. one lane only open in each direction and the signals were out.

The state people said they would be out of there by 10.

They were.

Serious rain tonight after 11, the beginning of seven days of rain:  https://www.radiomalibu.net/serious-rain-after-11-tonight/

The U-S Geologic Survey has looked at the fire-scraped mountains above Malibu … and the canyons below.  And it has released an alarming series of maps that show dozens of houses under water … or likely … surrounded by mud … in the event of a heavy rain. Details: https://www.radiomalibu.net/50-year-rain-could-damage-homes/

A 55-year-old Malibu woman who stayed to fight the fire took a lot of smoke … she died 5 weeks later.  This is the first reported death from the center of Malibu. Family members tell the Malibu Times that Point Dume resident Debbie Purucker died five weeks after the fire … in a hospital.  Details:   https://www.radiomalibu.net/pt-dume-woman-succumbs-to-fire/

It took a half year for this to happen … but official opposition is growing against allowing power companies to turn off electricity when it gets windy.  The California Public Utilities Commission got an earfull yesterday … about  held a public hearing on Public Safety Power Shutoffs … the preemptive blackouts that the CPUC suddenly imposed on California last summer without advance notice.  Details:  https://www.radiomalibu.net/calif-wakes-up-to-psps-blackouts/

Malibu lawyer Kevin Shenkman has another notch on his belt.

Camarillo has become the latest California city to switch from at large elections to voting by district.

Shenkman has sued 40 cities under the California Voting Rights Act … and nearly all of them have capitulated.

Palmdale and Santa Monica have challenged Shenkman in court … and lost.

The Santa Monica fight against district voting continues in appeals court.

But it appears that all 7 Santa Monica city council seats will be open in an April election … with district voting.

And this could affect voters on Malibu … inthe Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District.’

That’s because Santa Monica’s city charter controls voting procedures for the seven-seat school board that includes Malibu.

Could the school board also be shifted to district voting?
That could ensure that Malibu always has a school board member.

No determined yet.
