  • =    The fire chief wants to train citizen firefighters … so why isn’t that happening??

Malibu’s Only Local Daily News… from Radio Malibu  …. F-M 99 point 1 K B U U. Good morning … I’m Hans Laetz reporting.

——

A strange little storm is spinning up off San Diego … and it will collide with an approaching mass of cold air coming down the coast tonight.

That gives us the chance for a quarter inch of rain tomorrow … and maybe even a thunderstorm early in the morning.

We have a 60 percent chance of rain all day Wednesday.

It will be a cold storm … lows in the 40s in the local mountains … and snow levels will drop to around 6,000 feet over the inland mountains.

——

Southern California Edison escaped any serious criticism yesterday … when a state legislative committee examined power blackouts as a fire prevention tool.  And

Malibu’s state senator said he trusts Edison will get us out of the PSPS mess.   Details:  https://www.radiomalibu.net/sce-gets-a-pass-at-sacramento-hearing-malibu-senator-says-he-trusts-them-on-blackouts/

Malibu city officials are being prodded to work out some sort f three way deal with the sheriff and fire departments on the issue of fire evacuations … and citizen firefighting.  Details:  https://www.radiomalibu.net/fire-chief-wants-relationships-with-fire-volunteers-training-and-gear-so-where-is-the-city/

Palm trees are fire dangers … and planting new palm trees should be banned in Malibu.

That’s the rough consensus of the city Planning Commission … as they endorsed the first draft of an ordinance that would ban fire susceptible plants near houses in the city.

The commission stepped back from any talk of making the ordinance apply to existing houses.

One planning commissioner said people would appear with torches and pitchforks if the city tried to ban existing palm trees.

Eucalyptus trees might be banned if they are close to houses … unless they are a monarch butterfly habitat zone.

Wooden fences up against houses would also be banned … and the commissioners said they want to ban flammable building materials next to houses.

There was a long discussion on front yard privacy hedges … we’ll have more coverage on that tomorrow.

The ordinance is a work in progress at City Hall … the final decisions will be up to the city council.

Attention cheapskates.

The closest cheap gas station to Malibu has moved.

We’re talking about the beloved gas pumps at the Costco in Oxnard.

The membership club routinely beats the other stations by 20 or 30 cents per gallon.

And the beat Malibu pump princes by 50 cents to a dollar.

The gas station at the Oxnard Costco have been moved to the back of the store … on the big street that comes off of Rice Avenue.

The addition of eight new pumps may reduce congestion.

Or may not.

The pumps are now three deep … and we can only imagine the traffic chaos that will create.

Normally … KBUU supports patronizing local businesses.

For 50 cents a gallon on gasoline … we’ll make an exception.

Support for KBUU’s daily broadcasting … keeping the FM signal on the air … comes from the Malibu Foundation …
The KBUU solar panels and battery keep us on the air through storms and blackouts … 24/7 .. on clean … renewable solar power.
