Council Will Consider Immediate Eviction Ban As Statewide Rent Control Nears

Written by on November 11, 2019

An emergency ban on evicting renters in the City of Malibu goes before the city council tomorrow night.

The ordinance is aimed at prohibiting no-fault evictions … ejecting tenants in order to jack up the monthly price before a new state rent control law goes into effect … in seven weeks.

City staff is hearing that some landlords are evicting blameless residential tenants in an effort to raise rents and establish a higher base rent prior to the state rent control law goes into effect on January First.

The city manager says particularly troubling are reports that some evictions are aimed at long-term renters, including some who have been in the same location for decades.

The problem is especially severe here in Malibu …. where displacement is a significant problem exacerbated by the Woolsey fire.

If approved by the city council Tuesday … the eviction ban would go into effect immediately.
