Malibu’s City Council Says Little After Getting Demand Letter

Written by on November 6, 2019

Malibu’s city council met for 45 minutes behind closed doors yesterday … digesting a demand letter from a lawyer.

Leon Grimes is using the California Voting Rights Act to demand that Malibu city council candidates represent specific districts …. carving up Malibu into five city council districts.

Grimes claims that Latinos … who make up between six to eight percent of the population … cannot get a seat on the city council because the city votes for five councilmembers on a citywide basis.

City officials note that the small number of Latino voters in Malibu are scattered across the city … and that it would be impossible to draw a district that would have any concentration of Latino voters that is any greater than the citywide average.

No official comment … coming out of yesterday’s meeting.

But KBUU news has learned on background … from three people in the room … that the city will make some sort of response late tomorrow.
