Caltrans Activates Hotel’s Private Traffic Signal On PCH

Written by on October 22, 2019

Caltrans has turned on the new private traffic light on P C H.

The new pedestrian signal serves the Malibu Beach Inn.

Of course … anyone can push the button and stop traffic on PCH.

But this signal was  designed … paid for and installed by the private hotels’s owners … to benefit themselves.

The hotel owners want to move their parking lot across P C H so that they can build a swimming pool for hotel guests where the parking lot now stands.

They convinced the state engineers that the city had approved that plan … when in fact no such approval had ever been granted.

The city’s traffic engineers signed off on the concept … but the planning commission and city council have never approved it.

The traffic light is less than 500 feet from another pedestrian traffic light … on PCH at the pier.

Caltrans originally promised that the two signals would be synchronized … so that they would not turn red at alternating times.

The state went back on that promise … and said it would be technically impossible to synchronize two signals 400 feet apart.

The installation of the new signal … shows that Caltrans runs the show on P C H.

And not the city of Malibu.
