Black Ice Causes Spinout On Kanan Dume

Written by on February 6, 2019

It was cold enough overnight to cause black ice to form up in the mountains 35 degrees in the air … below freezing on the pavement before sunrise.

But an ambient temperature of 35° means the ground temperature is below freezing.

And water froze to the pavement in several places in the Santa Monica Mountains.

Specifically … on old Topanga Canyon Road.

And dangerously … on Kanan Dume Road.

That’s where an SUV spun out on black ice this morning … apparently the vehicle lost traction at the big curve before tunneled two.

It went off the road and into a pole… severely damaging it.

No reports of any injury.

The National Weather Service warns it could be almost that cold … again tonight.

Overnight lows of around 37° are predicted for tonight in the Santa Monica Mountains.

it’s 13 1/2 minutes after 12 o’clock.
