Is it a tidal wave or parent opposition to vaccines?

Or a very loud minority … making a very loud stand???

Tonight’s school board meeting is the venue … on the Zoom platforms.

The Santa Monica Malibu Unified School Board 

At a time that parents nationwide are stampeding to get their kids vaccinated against Covid 19 … the local school district is getting some loud pushback.

Many people say they are not anti-vax …. they claim they are anti-mandate.

Some feel to see the practical difference.

Tonight on the agenda …. The board Will again consider extending the state of emergency that allows meetings to be held over the Internet. But there is no specific item about vaccinations on the agenda.

Many school boards are waiting to see how the governors order for all California school children to be vaccinated will be implemented. 

Although the governor has ordered mandatory vaccinations… The state government has not forwarded any regulations about that.

And in a not-unrelated issue … the school board will also consider is civility a civility policy.

The Santa Monica based school board will consider adopting a policy adopted by the city of Santa Monica.

It calls for everyone to treat everyone with respect and courtesy.

And speaking of that …. The school board will go into closed door session at 4 o’clock this afternoon to again talk about the Malibu divorce petition.

The public is allowed to speak on that issue before the doors are closed … again that is at 4 p-m.

The public comments section is 10th on the agenda and may happen late at night.

The California Coastal Commission has approved guidelines for coastal cities to accommodate global ocean level rises.

A global ocean level rise of 10 feet.

That’s far an excess of the 6.1 feet in ocean level rise that had been used by the state up until now.

Even 6.1 feet was viewed as extreme … by the states on coastal scientists … who only gave a one in 200 chance of a 6.1 foot ocean level rise over the next 75 years.

Coastal commission is now urging communities to prepare for the Pacific Ocean to rise 10 feet That projection so far beyond current calculations that climate scientists haven’t yet determined the probability of it occurring. 

Coastal Commission staff pushed back on complaints.

They said the current calculations haven’t taken all pertinent information into account.

They said the loss of ice sheets in the Arctic and Antarctic … extreme ice sheet melt … justify the 10 foot scenario. 

And the Coastal Commission adopted a better safe than sorry approach.

They pushed the most extreme level of Ocean level rise for road and water infrastructure because of they are typically multi-million dollar commitments built for to last for decades or more.

Coastal cities opposed this. 

In particular … coastal cities objected to the coastal commission’s opposition to Coastal seawalls and favoring relocation.

Local jurisdictions also said they were afraid that the coastal commission guidance would be forced upon them.

The 230 page document that was adopted yesterday states that it is to be used as interpretive guidelines… And not regulations.

It was opposed by several high-profile agencies … including the League of California Cities.

It was approved unanimously by the coastal commission.

Two Malibu houses on the beach were to go before the California Coastal Commission today.

One is that house next to Trancas Creek … the house we reported on earlier this week.

That Trancas Creek oceanfront house has been postponed for some reason.

The other is a proposed oceanfront house near Big Rock.

This house has been delayed nearly two years because a neighbor appealed.

That gave the Coastal Commission staff room to extract promises from the homeowner …

First … the floor has been moved two feet higher from the ocean.

Second … the homeowner has had to acknowledge in a legally-binding document that the house is a new project… and under state law new projects cannot ever be protected by sea walls or other construction.

And finally … the land owner has to acknowledge that State property lines may cross underneath his property if the ocean level increases… and that the homeowner would remove any property from the state tidelands should that happen.

Malibu’s city council is still grappling with finding a way to alert Malibu residents to an emergency … like a fire or tsunami.

The city has a federal grant to build sirens … up and down the coast.

But acoustic engineers hired by the city say sirens won’t be effective when Santa Anna winds are howling and residents have to close the windows.

The city’s public safety commission recommended that sirens be supplemented with some type of other warning system.

They are now considering using FM radio stations … most particularly KBUU … that could transmit a silent signal 24/7.

And the city would hand out special alarm devices in every Malibu house in business.

The alarms would silently monitor the various FM signals …. and then go off if the city wants to alert people to listen to the radio … watch TV… or go onto the Internet to get information about a possible pending disaster.

The FM alarms could also be connected to the states earthquake warning system… and within five seconds of activation alert people that an earthquake is coming within 30 seconds is moving our way and my strike within 30 seconds.
KBUU will be testing the equipment to see if it can overcome Malibu’s mountains … and the station is recommending that other FM stations in the nearby area be added to the warning system.

KBUU is recommending that other radio stations in the Southbay be added to the silent alert system … to reach houses that may be beyond the KBUU signal.

We should know that KBUU is on track to install boosters to extend the 99.1 signal to the Civic Center and pier area … and also west of Trancas.

The matter goes before the city Council Monday night.

More good news on the monarch butterfly front.

Last year … butterfly counters found fewer than 2,000 butterflies … along the entire California coast.

Millions used to clutter in trees along the coast …  from Northern California’s Mendocino County to Baja California, Mexico, 

Their roosting sites are now concentrated mostly on California’s central coast … but also in Malibu.

An unofficial count by researchers and volunteers shows there are over 50,000 monarchs at overwintering sites so far.

Western monarch butterflies head south from the Pacific Northwest to California each winter.

On the eastern side of the Rocky Mountains … a separate monarch population travels from southern Canada and the northeastern United States to spend the winter in western Mexico.

The Santa Monica Third Street Promenade is making a remarkable comeback.

Last week … the Promenade was packed with shoppers …. Tourists … and hungry people.

There seem ed to be very few store vacancies.

It looked like it used to, 

Tomorrow night … at  6 … the Christmas Tree lights will be switched on.’Tens of thousands of lights are ready to be lit on the Promenade as well. 

Santa will also be rolling into town to oversee the lighting of the official City of Santa Monica 24-foot-tall holiday tree.

There will be performances by four Santa Monica youth musical groups … the Samohi Madrigals, Lincoln Middle School Madrigals, Santa Monica Youth Orchestra Mariachi Perla del Oeste and Santa Monica Youth Orchestra Chamber Ensemble.

Menorah lightings will also take place throughout Hannukah … which this year runs from Nov. 28 to Dec. 6. 

Lightings will begin nightly at sundown between Santa Monica Blvd and Broadway.
