City Hall Assumes 18 Inch Increase In Ocean Level – Coastal Comm Warns of 60 Inch Jump

Written by on February 5, 2019

No matter where you stand politically on global warming … the fact of the matter is that the ocean is rising.

Santa Monica Bay is already several inches higher that used to be … when waterfront houses were first built in Malibu.

Last night …. The city’s planning commission spend some time with marine engineers to Determine how to deal with that while approving new construction.

The city has a contract engineer to answer those questions … Mike Fitz.

And the bottom line question …. How much higher due houses have to be designed before they can be approved by the city of Malibu???

“Right now we are using 18 inches.

“Some consultants will use more than that.

“I’ve seen 2 to 3 feet used in some analyses … and they will provide a discussion of analyzing greater sea level rise, should happen.”

The state coastal commission says the amount of ocean rise that we will get is directly tied to how much carbon emissions can be trimmed buy countries around the world.

They’ve developed a series of scenarios … lots of carbon emissions would mean a scenario of Ocean levels increasing as much as 6 to 10 feet.

NEWSCART 03670 FITZ AAA QQQQ REALLY WHAT IT COMES DOWN TO.

“These scenarios are really interesting and they are pretty scary.

“Right now, we don’t really know: should a beach home be a low risk or a intermediate or high risk aversion situation.

“And then what type of emission scenario do you want to adopt, as a city, and then what should we be using as sea level rise.

That’s really what it comes down to.”

In other words … City planners right now are working on an assumption that the ocean level will go up 18 inches.

And that’s a wild guess … probably a conservative guess … in every sense of the term.
