Santa Monica Overrun With Beach Parking, Will End Shows At Tunnel

Written by on July 31, 2018

Gripes about summer beach crowds have been around since PCH was opened 1926.

But here’s more evidence that it’s getting worse the summer.

The city of Santa Monica has decided it will know longer rent out the parking lot next to the Santa Monica Pier for long-running special events.

The reason: too many beach visitors.

Starting 20 years ago … cirque du Soleil and other special events were allowed to set up for weeks at a time at the parking lot next to the McClure tunnel.

An underground storm water treatment project is being built there right now.

And when it’s finished … the city of Santa Monica says it will no longer do anything other than allow beach users to park there.

And yes … that means more people turning off P C H next to the tunnel … already a significant traffic jam maker on P C H.

This story is based on reporting in the Santa Monica Daily Press.
