Zuma Beach Underpass Touted As Possible Daytime Car Impound Lot

Written by on May 18, 2021

Malibu has a towaway problem.

What to do with cars that block traffic … block driveways … block fire lanes.

Last summer … that resulted in at least one resident having to spend the night in a hotel because she could not get into her driveway or park anywhere close.

Public safety commissioners have been on a hunt … trying to find a place somewhere near Zuma Beach … to temporarily park impounded cars during daytime hours.

Any cars left at night would be towed to an impound yard .. 22 miles away … in Newbury Park.

Using part of the barely-used Malibu Equestrian Center was one idea … the horse people bucked back.

Public safety commissioners Josh Speigel tells KBUU the parking lot has to be within walkng distance of Zuma Beach.

SPIEGEL 35

“Badically narrows it down from everything outside Point Dume and anything west of Trancas.

And the zoning has to be institutional.

“So we were left with Malibu Methodist School  … with toddlers in church …and  they said no.

“We were left with the (Malibu) High School … with its ongoing construction.

“They said go ahead and use the equestrian center …  ther citizens were obviously up in arms.

“We basically were left with the turnaround near Zuma.”

That would be the center of the circular underpass ramp … across Busch Drive from Spruzzos.

As you might expect … some people who live near there object.

Traffic … noise … too many people.

What about the children.

If the city cannot find an acceptable place … last summer’s total chaos will repeat … with no effective way to tow away cars.

The matter goes before the Planning Commission on June 7th.
