Trancas Creek Bridge Demolition Set For Friday – Oh Oh – Lagoon Is Full

Written by on May 31, 2022

Construction has finally begun in a big way on the PCH Trancas Creek bridge replacement.

After overnight work Wednesday … there will be one lane in each direction … as the road is going to be squeezed down into little bitty lanes as wide as a compact car parking space at an overcrowded supermarket.

There’s no left turn from PCH onto Broad Beach this morning.

The construction zone speed limit of 30 miles an hour is going to be in effect.

Bicyclists are now supposed to walk their bikes across the pedestrian bridge that has been bolted onto the side of the bridge ….   a quarter mile of walking … yeah right.

Crews are supposed to move in Friday to begin sawing apart the Trancas Bridge.

Work may be delayed … as the lagoon is full of ocean water.  The sand level by the ocean is very low this year … and every high tide … water washes into the lagoon.  That’s not been seen in 25 years … usually the lagoon is almost completely dry in the summertime.

The contractors may build a dam between the ocean and the bridge, using dirt from the old Riders And Ropers lot.

The plan is to have heavy equipment move onto the bridge this week … Friday to be precise … to slice the bridge in half.  That should be enjoyable.

Demolition of the inland side of the bridge is supposed to happen after that.  That will be even more enjoyable.

Then comes pile driving and demolition as the bridge is pecked to death by giant “ka-chunkers.”

It’s going to be a long June.

That will mean heavy equipment in the creek bed. The contractor has filled sand in under part of the bridge … but the ocean flooded it again Tuesday morning at high tide.

Of course … the detours on PCH have to be set up before the bridge can be cut up.  And before that … the traffic signal on Guernsey has to be turned on.

Look for that Thursday.
