Surging Number Of Virus Cases In OC May Spell Doom To Malibu Beach Reopening Hopes

Written by on April 28, 2020

The coronavirus is surging in Orange County.

Up more than 500 from a week ago.

And the curve there may go up even sharper … as thousands of people went to the beach.

That is a big deal to those of us 50 miles north in Malibu … wondering when the gates will open to our beaches.

Gov. Gavin Newsom said yesterday that the sight of crowds at Newport Beach is worrisome … as beach crowds could increase the spread of the disease and delay the gradual reopening of California.

Newsome says he may send in the Calfornai Higheay patrol to restrict beach access … if Orange County can’t get its act together.

“We cant see the images like we saw … particularly on Saturday in Newport Beach and elsewhere in the state of California and we’ve got to confront that.”

The governor wanted that progress towards gradually reopening the rest of the state will be jeopardized if people do things like crowd beaches, which occurred over the warm spring weekend.

“We are just a few weeks away – not months away – from making making measurable and meaningful changes to our stay at home order.

“However, that’s driven by data, that’s driven by behavior any changes to our stay at home order, Will be driven by data.

“And as we change our behavior we can impact the science the data. This virus doesn’t take the weekend off, this virus doesn’t take the day off because it’s a beautiful sunny day.”

City officials in Newport Beach may further restrict beach access … as a result of last weekend’s crowded beaches.

But Orange County’s Board of Supervisors says they are happy … that beachgoers maintained proper distancing protocols …

They did a “great job” of keeping apart … says the chairwoman.
