Special Council Meeting Might Result In Task Force To Investigate Fire

Written by on December 17, 2018

Malibu will likely form a formal commission … a task force … to look into what went wrong during the Woolsey Fire.

A special city council meeting has been called for Tuesday afternoon to renew the emergency declaration … as must be done every two weeks.

And at that meeting … the city council is being asked to create the commission by city manager Reva Feldman.

Some factions in the city blame Feldman for the inadequate number of fire trucks … the delay-plagued evacuation … and the unreasonably long delays on getting evacuation orders lifted.

Others say that Feldman’s hands were tied by fire truck allocations made far above her … by the state emergency center or county fire department.

An unverified internet petition seeking her to be fired has gathered about one thousand names over two weeks.

We say unverified … because it is open to people outside of Malibu to sign it … and there are no ways to prevent people from signing it more than once.

The petition also calls for Feldman to be recalled … a legal impossibility as she is not an electec person.

But Feldman has the strong support of most influential Malibu residents … particularly the city council members who have appointed her.

In a memo to the city council … Feldman says she agrees that every aspect of this disaster should be examined so that it can be determined what was done right and what improvements are needed in order for the community to be better prepared for future disasters.

Feldman writes that she also agrees that it is critical that members of the community must have an active role in both the review of what was done and determining what improvements should be implemented for the future.

The city council needs to decide how many members would need to be on the Task Force and how those members will be selected.
