SMMUSD Plans To Keep Vacation Schedule, But Sacramento Has Yet To Weight In On That

Santa Monica school officials are sticking to the calendar … and the school year in Malibu is not going to be extended … and spring break is not going to be trimmed.
For nowe.
This … despite the loss of one month of classroom time due to the fires…. and another three days due to rain.
That’s the message from officials at the Santa Monica-Malibu School District … which yesterday sent a letter to parents.
But … the loss of about 23 days of teaching time is being evaluated by the California Department of Education … which has not yet approved the clipped off school year.
Officials Malibu High School say they understand why parents are worried … that their kids missed too much time in the classroom because of the fires and rain.
They say principals and teachers are working diligently to provide students with what they need to master grade level standards.
The educators are giving kids a break on homework … to give them a high degree of flexibility on deadlines.
Tests are being altered … to provide what the schools call “differentiated opportunities for students to demonstrate their learning.”
Teachers are identifying what essentially needs to be taught.
And principals are adjusting schedules to maximize instructional time.
But the district says it is not extending the school year … or adding days during spring break, unless otherwise directed by the California Department of Education.
District officials say they are in communication with the state and will confirm this plan at a later time.
The district says they undertsand that this is a challenging time for students and educators.
The Santa Monica Malibu School Board will meet tonight at Malibu City Hall.
The start time has been pushed back to 6.
