SCE Blasts Malibu, Says CPUC Knows Best On Blackouts

Written by on November 6, 2018

The Southern California Edison company is charging that the city of Malibu is acting against Malibu’s interests … by fighting the utilities preemptive blackout plan.

Edison lawyers teamed up with Pacific Gas and Electric to file a legal claim at the California Public Utilities Commission in San Francisco yesterday.

They urge the commission to reject request from the city to modify the CPUC decision that allows electric companies to shut off power in wind storms.

The lawyers say Malibu is acting against the interests of the stakeholders that Malibu purports to represent.

And … that the power blackouts are actuallygood for us.

And that the effect of hundreds of generators starting up during blackouts is not a negative environmental impact.

The lawyers say … Malibu does not appreciate that the CPUC requirements on the utilities are comprehensive … and that the CPUC knows best.

City manager Reva Feldman tells KBUU that the city has hired an outside law firm to answer Southern California Edison’s claims.

The city has filed a legal action with the CPUC to modify the order allowing preemptive blackouts.

Zuma Beach FM broadcasters … licensee of KBUU radio … has filed a similar legal action.

Meanwhile … the state legislature has ordered a top to bottom review of Edison’s wildfire planning … including preemptive blackouts.

This comes after the first Edison Company preemptive blackout warning in a  wind storm … last month … caused so much confusion that the CPUC issued orders to Edison to drastically change it’s notification procedures.

As a party to the action … KBUU Radio recognizes its obligation to report on this issue thoroughly and accurately.
