Santa Monica-Malibu School Board Seat Is Open, Apply Now* (*Probably Unless You Are From Malibu, Some Would Say)

Written by on December 2, 2020

Santa Monica-Malibu school board members will select a new person to sit on the seven member board … and applications are open.

The chance of them picking a Malibu resident is approximately zero … an educated observer would surmise.

Longtime board member Oscar de la Torre was elected to the Santa Monica City Council in the November election.

Following eligibility reviews, interviews and deliberations, board members will appoint one of the applicants during a public meeting on Jan 14, 2021.

The new member will serve out the remaining two years of de la Torre’s term.

There are no term limits in the school board … so a lifelong career in the job is possible.

Santa Moncia residents … who control the board … have shown little to no inclination to ever unseat any incumbent.

De la Torre served for four and a half terms.

He is a relative newcomer … compared to Maria Leon Vazquez … now in her 21st year on the board.

Applications will be accepted until 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 17 and can be found at https://www.smmusd.org/Page/6279 .

To be eligible … applicants must be at least 18 years old, a citizen of California and registered voter residing inside the school district boundaries, and not be disqualified by the Constitution or laws from holding a civil office.

Presumably … a resident of Santa Monica.

SMMUSD employees are welcome to apply, but must resign from their position if elected.

On the Jan. 14, the school board will undertake interviews, deliberations, and final appointment will via Zoom.
