San Clemente Safe Homeless Parking Blows Up In Legal Challenge, From Homeless

Written by on July 3, 2019

Malibu residents seeking a solution to the problem of homeless people in R V s parked along the highway have been pointing to San Clemente as a possible solution.

In San Clemente … a parking lot has been designated a safe parking place for overnight parking for homeless people in RVs.

32 vehicles are allowed at the city storage lot.

But yesterday … attorneys representing homeless people asked a federal judge to shut down the month-old experiment.

This… according to the Orange County Register.

They lawyers claim the safe parking lot has become overcrowded, has no shade or water, is difficult for disabled people to access and traverse, and lacks adequate sanitation and servicing of its portable toilets.

The hillside homeless safe parking lot was declared a homeless zone by the San Clemente city council in May, after area residents complained about homeless people defecating in public and using drugs, among other safety issues, elsewhere in town.

The lawyers claim that San Clemente … “under threat of arrest … forced unhoused people to move to a barren piece of land previously found unfit for human or animal habitation.”

The Orange County Register reports that attorneys representing San Clemente argue that the injunction request “borders on the frivolous,”

They say there are cases of donated water left at the site and a water fountain a short walk away.

The San Clemente parking lot has been pointed out as a possible model for Malibu … where deputies are unable to order homeless people in RVs out … because there is no place for them to go.
