‘Progressive’ Sheriff Attacks Republican County Supervisor On Hannity Show

Written by on July 7, 2020

LA County sheriff Alex Villanueva is mounting a public relations fight … trying to pressure the L A County Board of Supervisors on budget cuts.

L A County is facing painful program cuts and job losses in every department.

Last week … supervisors approved cutting more than 3,200 county positions.

14 hundred of those jobs are in the sheriff’s department.

Law enforcement takes up roughly 40% of the county’s general fund.

Villanueva appeared on the Sean Hannity show on Fox News last Friday.

The sheriff defines himself as a progressive … but on the Hannity show … he aligned himself with a panel of far right wing commentators going after Democrats on the law and order issue.

“The needs to provide public safety continues to rise.

“Crime hasn’t gone away because people don’t like law enforcement

“We still have to answer…

“And the one thing they can’t even bring to their mouths:

“The cannot even mouth the words victim of crimes.

“No one is listening to victims of crimes … or law abiding citizens.

“For some reason … all of  sudden that’s unpopular … to speak up on behalf of victims.

“But I will.”

The sheriff and his fellow panelists on the Hannity show spent time attacking supervisors chairperson Kathryn Barger as soft on crime.

Ironically … she is a conservative Republican … and the sheriff publicly describes himself as a progressive.

The controversial sheriff is in a fight with the board of supervisors … not only over budgets … but over civilian control.

71 percent of L A County voters in the last election favored giving civilian oversight of the sheriff the power of subpoenas.

Villanueva has rejected that … and said that civilian oversight is unconstitutional.

The sheriff is also reversing the firings of deputies who had been found to have roughed up domestic partners … or suspects … or otherwise run afoul of reform measures.

Villanueva calls all that … political payback from his enemies.

Villanueva is mounting a public relations battle to try to reverse some of the cuts.

Yesterday … he gathered some people whose family members were murdered…. for a press conference at the sheriff’s homicide bureau.
