County Demolition Opt In Deadline Extended To Feb 15 – FEMA and SBA Also

Written by on February 1, 2019

With just minutes to spare … local homeowners yesterday got a two-week extension on the deadline to decide how to remove debris from destroyed homes.

County officials negotiated the deadline extension with the state governor’s office of Emergency Services …

The delay does not mean the March 15th demolition deadline has been extended.

And it does not mean that demolition work will be delayed.

County Department of Public Works assistant director Coby Skye tells KBUU News the county knows people have a lot of questions.

NEWSCART

SKYE: “what happen is actually we talked with the state, we know that there’s a lot of folks that are still trying to meet the deadlines and what they said is that they will work with us to accept late submittals. So not exactly the same as an extension of the deadline but the effect is the same, that folks that submit the application after today’s deadline can still be included in the program.

“and we think that’s great news cause we do want to get as many of those folks signed up as possible.

REPORTER: “Will this mean any slippage in the calendar for construction, for destruction, for demolition to begin

SKYE: well it means that the folks that submit later will obviously have their properties cleared a little bit later, so it means the rebuilding process will take a little bit longer.

“but that’s another reason we’re going to continue pushing the word out to get as many folks as possible to sign-up

REPORTER: “so when do you think we’ll see the first actual County State contractor heavy equipment move into the area?”
SKYE: “So the crews have already been out doing assessments, I think they did nearly 200 assessments already. And the actual big equipment and debris clearances going to start next week.
