Barbara Ferrer … yesterday.

NEWSCART 7A3111 MASKSEND k-12 schools

“Masking as of 12:01 AM Wednesday will no longer be required for outdoors or at outdoor mega spaces or an outdoor spaces at grades K through 12 schools “

And it was already scheduled. … but lunch trucks will be at Malibu High School today … sort of a celebration.

School superintendent Ben Drati told parents last night kids have the greenlight to take their masks off outside.

But indoors they must still mask up… and some kids who are on quarantine while on campus will need to continue to wear their masks during the course of their quarantine.

Masks indoors for everyone is still the rule.

And that goes for the rest of L A County …. Even thought the statewide rules have been eased … LA County.

The official tally of positiver Covid 19 tests for the city of Malibu is poised to cross the two thousand line today.

It stands at 19 hundred 96.

These are only confirmed positive cases at local clinics… Doctors offices… Hospitals or testing centers… For people who live within the city limits. Self tests are not included… And some people may have tested more than once.

Malibu death toll has been at 13 for several months now.

The death toll for the surrounding Santa Monica mountains region stands at 18.

There were fur additional Covid deaths last week in Santa Monica …. And 13 covid fatalities in the last month.

In two years … 213 people have been killed by Covid 19 in Santa Monica.

But the omicron surge has crested … fought by the vaccines and boosters.

Back in the Malibu and Santa Monica schools … Drati says the majority of students and staff are now vaccinated .

And now that 5 to 12-year-olds are authorized to be vaccinated, we feel confident that this alignment continues to be in the best interests of students and staff.

Homelessness Task Force Makes Progress Finding Shelters In LA

Malibu’s Homelessness Task Force is making headway in finding s shelter for homeless people in Malibu … a shelter that would probably be in Los Angeles.

Task force members have been meeting with consultants on creating group homes in existing houses in L,A.

Real estate prices make putting a shelter in Malibu unrealistic.

Kelly Pessis … a task force member … says LA is open to working with other cities on a regional approach.

Pessis told the task force yesterday that she’s been in talks with a consultant in Los Angeles.

“There are a whole host of residential properties being used for homeless beds… So he is going to put us in touch with some of the partners… And who knows maybe getting a partnership going..”

Pessis told the Homelessness Task Force there are more than 70 such projects underway in the City of LA in just one city council district in L-A.

“One of them at least one of them is a partnership with Culver City ..  so this will only give partnering with other areas is something that other people are doing and I really encourage that we try to do likewise.”

The Malibu Homelessness Task Force is convinced that there city needs to fund a shelter for homeless persons who make their way to Malibu.

Without that … the local sheriffs department will be unable to enforce rules against sleeping in the streets … on the beaches … or in the hills.

The task force is also adamant that the shelter -not- be in Malibu..

It’s report is heading to the city council.

NOAA Study Predicts 14 Inch Ocean Level Increase Here By 2050, Coastal Comm Estimate Is Far Worse

You may be hearing national news media taking about a new study from the federal government … which predicts that ocean levels nationwide will be an average of 10 to 12 inches higher by the year 2050,

Human-caused climate change, driven mostly by the burning of fossil fuels, has accelerated global sea level rise to the fastest rate in more than 3,000 years.

That;’s according to the new study … from NOAA … the national Oceanographic and Atmospheric Admininstration.

The NOAA projection for California … 14 inches higher …. contradicts scientific guidance being used by the Cajiforni  Coastal Commission.

And the Coastal Commission is the law in California.

Coastal is calling for an ocean level rise of up to 6 point 6 feet.

The new USGS study sats  major Eastern cities hit regularly with costly floods even on sunny days, a government report says the Ocean level will be 14 inches higher in Los Angeles in 2060 than it is now.

The new federal study also says thatBut California will be hit less than east coast cities … because sea level rise will vary regionally along U.S. coasts because of changes in both land and ocean height.

The federal report expects much higher ocean level increases on the Gold Coast and on the Eadsterbn Seaboard.

Almost 25 inches of sea level rise in Galveston, Texas, by the year 2060.

But just 14 inches at Los Angeles.

However, the worst of the long-term sea level rise from the melting of ice sheets in Antarctica and Greenland probably won’t kick in until after 2100.

The big question in California beach cities will be ….how will the coastal commission reconcile it’s much higher estimates… With a more conservative estimate from NOAA.

Boeing, With $1B Bill Due To Clean Up Santa Susanna, Offers $1M For Cougar Overpass

Now what???

That’s the question facing the group trying to raise 90 million dollars to build a wildlife bridge … for mountain lions and other animals to cross the 101 freeway north of Malibu.

Doinations are funding the project.

Now … the Boeing Corporation has stepped forward with a $1 million contribution for the bridge. Why Boeing? They’re trying to be a good corporate citizen… And they own the Santa Susanna Field Lab.

Boeing purchased Rocketdyne at decade ago … and with that purchase inherited the environmental disaster at Santa Susanna.

Debris from decades of rocket tests… And radioactive material from a nuclear disaster up there… needs to be removed.

Yes … the site includes the ignition point for the Woolsey Fire,.

As the Thousand Oaks Acorn newspaper reports …. Boeing has previously contributed to a long-term National Park Service study of mountain lions in the Santa Monica Mountains.

Boeing has also and helped pay to teach young students to connect with nature.

Critics say Boeing’s recent $1-million donation to the Agoura wildlife overpass, which lies only 9 miles south of the former field lab, is meant to deceive the public into believing that the company is environmentally friendly.

The gift is an attempt to pay for past sins … says says Melissa Bumstead, an activist who is calling upon Boeing to take a more aggressive role in the field lab cleanup.

She tells the Acorn newspaper that the million dollar bridge donation … quote … “nothing more than a greenwashing tactic.

Bumstead tells the Acorn that Boeing is responsible for approximately $1 billion dollars to clean up the Santa Susana Field Lab.

State Sen. Henry Stern says “Boeing cannot donate their way out of their legal obligations at Santa Susana. They need to stop dragging their heels and start the cleanup,” according to the Acorn.
