POSTED 7PM FRI DEC 3

Covid has taken the life of another resident of Malibu.

And Malibu Middle School has been listed as a potential outbreak site.

There is no indication whatsoever that the Malibu death is linked somehow to the school … but the unrelated items are indicators that Covid 19 may be surging in Malibu heading into winter.

As for the Malibu death total … L A County noted the uptick …. from 11 to 12 … yesterday.  No name will be released by authorities …. Federal medical privacy rules prevent that.

In addition to the 12 people killed by Covid who lives within the city of Malibu … another 18 people who lives in the county area of the Santa Monica Mountains have been killed by it.  That would include Topanga Canyon and mountain communities like El Nido.

Deaths from Covid are rarely sudden … this person likely contracted the disease weeks ago.  But in recent days … the weekly testing at Malibu Middle School found 5 positive people … either by their test results … or if they showed symptoms.

Malibu Middle School’s winter concert was moved outdoors last night … a precautionary move … after the school noted 5 persons who either got positive test … or showed actual symptoms of Covid 19.  That was enough to trigger the county Department of Public Health to identify Malibu Middle School as a potential outbreak site by the LA County Department of Public Health.

The school district immediately notified parents … and started a process of contact tracing … identifying which teachers or students were in close proximity to the positive persons.

School principal Patrick Miller sent out another letter to parents last night.  He said given the potential outbreak, we are reviewing upcoming events for tightened Covid protocols.

Indoor concerts … moved outdoors.  That includes Thursday night’s orchestra performance … held in a chilly grass quad.  Proof of vaccination or a recent negative Covid test was required for entry, and masks were to be worn at all times.

And the principal is again pleading with parents to not send their kids to school if they are experiencing any symptoms of the disease.

Southern California has its first confirmed case of the new Omicron coronavirus variant, Los Angeles County public health officials confirmed Thursday evening, Dec. 2, a day after the country’s first case was confirmed in San Francisco

The omicron variant is at least three times more likely to cause reinfection than previous variants such as beta and delta, according to a preliminary study published yesterday in South Africa.

As expected… The first omicron variant case has been detected in Los Angeles county.  Los Angeles County Public health Director Barbara Ferrer says the scientific consensus is that vaccines will be at least somewhat effective against omicron.

The apparent new surge of COVID-19… The arrival of the winter coronavirus transmission season… And the appearance of a scary new variant are converging.

Rapid Covid 19 testing is now being offered at LAX.

The testing site .. inside the Tom Bradley Terminal building … is open for arriving or departing passengers.

Getting back to the schools … the Santa Monica Malibu school district remains an outlier in not requiring vaccinations for children. The gigantic Los Angeles school district and smaller school districts like Culver City have already have already instituted vaccine requirements for older students … and will require vaccinations for kids as young as five as soon as the federal government certifies the vaccine for young children.

Yet another judge has turned back an anti-VAX group’s request to immediately halt San Diego a school vaccine mandate.  That was in the states second largest school district… San Diego.
