Malibu May Study Desalinated Water

Written by on April 4, 2018

Could Malibu be drinking desalinated ocean water soon?
And what would that mean for the ocean environment?

How would the salty brine affect fish in Santa Monica Bay?

The West Basin Municipal Water District is the wholesale water agency that buys water delivered from the State water project … and sells it to County waterworks district 29 … our local water Company.

West Basin is looking for local sources of water … more reliable.

And West Basin is looking at the ocean.

They propose a very large desalinization plant near LAX … at a site currently used to generate electricity next to El Porto Beach.

That natural gas steam plant there is shutting down … and West Basin proposes to build a reverse osmosis to clean up as much as 60 million gallons a day of salt water.

The salt would be filtered out of the ocean water and flushed back into Santa Monica Bay.

Cities down the coast are asking Malibu to join in a joint effort to critique the project.

The proposal is analyzed in an E I R …. and it admits that plankton and fish larvae would be killed in the process … and that concentrated salt brine would be flushed back to the bay.

The Malibu city council will look at joining the environmental review of the project … being conducted bu other Santa Monica Bay cities …. at Monday’s meeting.
