Malibu Lawyer Sends $22M Legal Bill To Santa Monica

Written by on June 5, 2019

Malibu lawyer Kevin Shenkman has sent a 22 million dollar bill to the City of Santa Monica.

Shenkman was lead attorney in a successful … so-far successful … lawsuit aimed at forcing the city council in Santa Monica to be elected by districts … instead of at large.

This could have an impact on the Santa Monica Malibu unified school district … which is controlled by the city of Santa Monica city charter.

If the city council drops its appeal … or loses its appeal … and adopts District voting … it might also put Malibu in one of seven school voting districts.

Or it might not.

Shenkman and his team of other lawyers have so far won …

He represents Oscar de la Torre … a Santa Monica Malibu school board member … and one of several Latinos suing Santa Monica.

The plaintiffs are “prevailing” and “successful” in upholding the rights of “thousands of Latino voters in Santa Monica,” Shenkman says.

Of the 22 million dollar bill being sent to Santa Monica … about 13 and a half million would go to Shenkman’s law firm.

The city has brought in major guns to the lawsuit …. Gibson Dunn & Crutcher.

City lawyer Theodore J. Boutrous, Jr says Shenkman should recover no fees or costs because the City’s election system is fair and complies with the law.

So far  …the courts have not agreed. …
