LAUSD Closes For 2 Weeks, Malibu School Reopening Decision Yet To Be Made

Written by on March 13, 2020

Los Angeles school officials on Friday voted to shut down the nation’s second-largest school system effective Monday, citing concerns over the rapid spread of the coronavirus. The district has about 900 campuses serving more than 670,000 children and adult students.

Los Angeles district officials said that they will continue meal programs and offer televised and online lessons in an attempt to help families.

San Diego Unified School District will also shut down on Monday. Neither district said when schools would reopen.

Teachers will be paid.

So will other staff.

LA schools will be closed at least 2 weeks.

In the Santa Monica Malibu School District … campuses are closed today and Monday … and educators in Santa Monica-Malibu schools are getting ready for a semi-permanent closure.

And one parent somewhere in the Santa Monica public schools system … but not Malibu … has been exposed to Covid 19.

Not … “has Covid 19.”

Has been exposed to Covid 19.

And emphasize … it was in Santa Monica … not Malibu.

And after first issuing only vague descriptions of the school as somewhere in Santa Monica … superintendent Ben Drati and his staff have issued additional information.

Says Drati … “upon further discussion, we agreed that additional information would be appropriate to be shared with our staff and families regarding the exposures mentioned.

We want to inform you that we are aware of several situations where people MAY have been exposed to Coronavirus.

“These potential exposures are related to Franklin Elementary, John Muir Elementary and Santa Monica High School.

“We can assure our communities that we have no confirmed cases of COVID-1.”

But that is not good enough for some parents.

Many have kept their kids home from school … and explain it this way.

NEWSCUT 75472 WORRIED PARENT

“I kept my three children home on Wednesday and Thursday.  I emailed the attendance supervisor and the principal of the high school to let  them know that I wanted to wait to see how the pandemic was progressing before I sent my children back to Malibu Middle School and Malibu High. They both informed me that their absences would be unexcused. They also added the tip on hand washing.. Pretty disappointing.”

While the schools are closed to kids today and Monday … staff and teachers will prepare for possible semi-permanent school closures next week.

Educators are consulting with local agencies and considering the status of this health emergency in LA County and the communities we serve.
