This is KBUU News – the headlines:

  • = Another litter of inbred mountain lions born in the Sant Monica Mountains.
  • = What to prevent everyone in Malibu from turning their garage into a vacation rental?
  • = Not much … and the city planning commission doesn’t much like that.
  • = Caltrans changes its mind a third time on PCH … but says the mistakes are s not design errors.
  • = And if you live in Zuma Beach or points west … prepare for the city emergency phone test today.

This is Malibu’s only local daily news. It’s the Wednesday edition … from Radio Malibu  …. F-M 99 point 1 K B U U. Good morning … I’m Hans Laetz reporting.

——

They may be adorable, but the litter of four new mountain lion kittens born above Malibu have a sketchy family line and a possibly-dismal future. Details: https://www.radiomalibu.net/adorable-cougar-kittens/

Granny flats … upstairs apartments … back units are required to be allowed in Malibu now. But what of everyone turns their garages into bed and breakfasts?  Details:  https://www.radiomalibu.net/rental-unit-additions/

It wasn’t a design error … just a series of mistakes.  That’s the official word form Caltrans as the road is realigned for a second time. Details: https://www.radiomalibu.net/caltrans-moves-pch-lanes-back-over/

= In news from down the coast … the Los Angeles City Council has approved the plan for private companies to put 10,500 scooters on LA streets.

15 mile per hour speed limits.

No riding on sidewalks.

Malibu’s city council has asked the city attorney to draw up a complete ban on using electric scooters in Malibu … and the city attorney says using them is already illegal on Pacific Coast Highway.

Nevertheless … the occasional bird or lime scooter migrates up the coast into central Malibu here or there.

= Santa Monica’s Big Blue Bus is considering a plan to discontinue weekend bus service along three bus routes … and instead offer riders discounted prices on Lyft rideshare services.

The idea is to replace infrequent weekend bus service on a few lines with Lyft chauffeurs.

Hiring Lyft drivers will be cheaper than running empty buses at off-peak hours.

A Lyft ride that normally would cost 10 dollars would cost 2 dollars within the coverage zones …. mostly along Olympic Boulevard away from the beach.

= Today is the disaster test for the City of Malibu.

If you live in the western most quarter of Malibu … the city will try to call you today.

Or SMS you … a message to your cellphone … if you’re set up.

The idea is to test one quarter of the city at a time … with the phione dialling system called Everbridge.

The first test last year was a success … in that it didn’t work as planned at all.

Most of the city did not get the test … as computer systems and phone lines jammed.

City officials learned that it is impractical to dial all of the land lines and the 3600 registered cell phones at the same time.

The emergency phone system would probably never be used for the entire 21 mile long city anyway … so they’ve broken up Malibu into four quarters for this test.

This week … phone lines from Zuma Beach west will be tested.

Next Wednesday … it will be phone lines in the Paradise Cove … winding way and Point doom areas.

We will keep you posted.
