Written by on September 11, 2018

This is KBUU News – the Tuesday headlines:

  • =  Civic Center Way construction ahead … it will mean closure of the road for a short time this winter.
  • =  Edison is asking for a half billion dollars from its ratepayers … to improve fire safety.
  • =  The question is … aren’t ratepayers already paying for that … to a company that makes 12 percent return on investment.
  • =  The city … and FEMA … both plan emergency tests tomorrow and Thursday.
  • =  And it was yet another hit and run that closed Topanga Canyon yesterday.

This is Malibu’s only local daily news. It’s the   ((((  time  ))) edition of the (((  day ))) news … from Radio Malibu  …. F-M 99 point 1 K B U U. Good morning … I’m Hans Laetz reporting.

In other Malibu news:

It took until 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon for utility crews from Southern California Edison to replace a large power pole and restring the large number of cables in Topanga Canyon.

At 11 57 Monday night … a car smashed into a power pole at Topanga Canyon Boulevard at Entrado.

Lines and pole went onto the pavement … the driver hopped into another car and took off.

The CHP is still looking for the driver ….

Southbound lanes were reopened at around 830 yesterday morning … but the northbound Road was closed at old Topanga Road all day.

Like PCH and many of the other canyon roads … Topanga Canyon is beset by late night packs of racing cars and thrill seekers.

When crashes happen … often the drivers are scooped up by their friends.

There’s no word if that’s what happened yesterday in Topanga Canyon.

But the hit and run crash maybe a symptom a much larger problem.

Malibu residents interviewed by KBUU are noting a noticeable uptick in late night racing activity and loud exhibitions of speed on Pacific Coast Highway … and in the canyons.

A generation raised on fast and furious movies has its wheels now ….

Tomorrow is phase 2 of the City of Malibu emergency phone test.

People who have signed up for the emergency phone notification system … and all landlines … will get the test calls and phone text messages.

This will be in the Point Dume  …. Paradise Cove … and Winding Way neighborhoods …

They will get an announcement at around noon tomorrow.

On Thursday … the federal government is going to test cell phone alerts all across the country.

You can expect your cell phone to make loud noises at around 11 o’clock in the morning Pacific Time.

KBUU will also be required to interrupt programming at 11 with a test interrupt from FEMA in Washington.

All radio television and cable channels will also carry the mandatory test … next Thursday.
