Malibu’s Only Local Daily News … from Radio Malibu  …. F-M 99 point 1 K B U U. Good morning … I’m Hans Laetz reporting.

The weather is ….

And the surf is …

More questions than answers this morning … on reports of the first case of Covid 19 in Malibu.

The Pepperdine Graphic newspaper reported that a Pepperdine student attending classes at Malibu has tested positive for COVID-19.

The student was reported as – NOT – living on the campus.

Where was this person living???

Or living now???

But the student’s place of residence was not reported.

A university press release was quoted by the student newspaper … and the Malibu Times.

According to that statement …

“The university learned today of two additional confirmed positive COVID-19 test results within the Pepperdine community, including the first known COVID-19 case on the Malibu campus.

“The student did not live in university housing and is now in isolation.”

None of this has been confirmed overnight by the university … or anyone else.

This would mark the first confirmed COVID-19 case in the Malibu community.

As the Malibu Times reports … county officials have not provided data indicating that Malibu residents have tested positive for the disease.

Again … the county Department of Public Health is the only source for information about locations of Covid-19 patients.

And they firmly will not provide details of specific cases.

Public health investigations, under state and federal law, are confidential.

Specific information is disclosed by the county when necessary to prevent the occurrence of additional cases.

Late yesterday afternoon, officials learned that a Santa Monica College student tested positive for COVID-19, the coronavirus. This is the first known, confirmed case of coronavirus at SMC. This student was last on campus on Thursday, March 12. In collaboration with Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (“Public Health”), SMC has reached out to this student, who is in isolation off campus and is receiving the care needed from healthcare providers. We will be keeping tabs on the student’s progress and wish a speedy recovery.

Still … officially … no cases tested in Malibu.

But 2 cases are listed as in the Santa Monica Mountains.

And 2 in the City of Santa Monica.

But county health officials say it is unquestionable that there are undetected cases here.

231 cases in LA County

2 deaths.

In nearby Ventura County … 17 cases.

For the first time … Ventura County officials released the locations of those who have tested positive.

Five were reported in Simi Valley, four in Camarillo, three in Oxnard, two in Thousand Oaks, and one each in Ventura, Santa Paula and just up Kanan Road … in Oak Park.

What stays open:

  • Pharmacies
  • Food: Grocery stores, farmers markets, food banks, convenience stores, takeout and delivery restaurants
  • Banks
  • Gas stations
  • Laundromats/laundry services
  • Essential state and local government functions including law enforcement and offices that provide government programs and services.

——

The Malibu Farmers Market will be open tomorrow … with a re-arranged stall layout to maximize social distancing.

The Fig Tree Farm on Point Dume is also open today … with its fresh organic produce.

At th eother end of the spectrum … Costco, at the epicenter of coronavirus binge shopping, is updating its policies to keep the germs at bay and shelves stocked.

If you’ve seen lines forming outside a local Costco, it’s because the stores are limiting the number of shoppers allowed inside, forcing the crowd to wait outside with carts ready. Store managers have told the Southern California News Group that supplies in high demand are often sold out by midday, even with the crowd controls in place.

Costco’s boss says the big-box retailer was taking steps to “control the number of members in our warehouses and asked that members and employees practice social distancing.”

This … as an employee at Costco Wholesale’s corporate headquarters near Seattle died Sunday after contracting COVID-19, according to an internal email obtained by BuzzFeed News.

——

The chairman of the California Coastal Commission is hospitalized … on a respirator … after getting sick at the last meeting.

Steve Padilla has COVID 19.

Padilla is in the intensive care unit at UC San Diego

Padilla says he began feeling sick while at the last Coastal Commission meeting in Santa Cruz … and had traveled through the San Jose Airport, where multiple TSA agents have tested positive.

The man says … and we quote …

“This is intense. My body is fighting like hell to battle this thing. My fever is constantly high,” he told VOSD in a story published Monday. “I can’t imagine how bad this would be for anybody who is vulnerable. It’s very serious.”

The most recent U.S. Drought Monitor released Thursday shows that although recent rains have provided some relief for Southern California, Northern California remains locked in moderate drought or abnormally dry conditions.

“Don’t get too euphoric about our mini-March Miracle,” Patzert warns. “It doesn’t fill the bill as a drought buster, and it certainly is a fuel-maker for the summer fire season.”

Scott McLean of Cal Fire agrees, noting the varied nature of rainfall throughout the state. “It just waters the vegetation,” promoting growth of “light, flashy fuel such as grass and weeds that are the fuse that lights wildfires.”

Meanwhile, and more importantly, the Northern Sierra 8-Station Index stands at 57% of normal, as of Thursday, according to the California Department of Water Resources. The index is the average of eight precipitation measuring sites that provide a representative sample of the Northern Sierra’s major watersheds. These watersheds include the Sacramento, Feather, Yuba and American rivers, which flow into some of California’s biggest reservoirs. Along with water from the Colorado River, they provide a large portion of the Los Angeles and Southern California water supply.
