Just over $1.4 million was raised for childhood cancer research at the 32nd Annual Malibu Triathlon, organizers said.

The event took place Sunday and Saturday, and saw some swimmers decide to forgo the swim as heavy winds hit Zuma Beach Saturday.

Conditions were less turbulent Sunday.

Alexander Romanenko was overall winner of the triathlon, finishing the half-mile swim, 17-mile bike ride and four mile run in 1 hour, 15 minutes and 19 seconds.

Julie Ertel was the fastest woman, at 1:30:39.

In the celebrity division, actor Martin Henderson (Grey’s Anatomy) was the fastest man with a time of 1:43:07.

And movie actress Isabelle Fuhrman was the fastest woman … at 2:00:51.

Team Community took the first-place spot in the co-ed celebrity relay division with an overall time of 1:26:57.

There was some grumbling in Malibu Park  Saturday .. when there was apparent confusion about how to get  out of Malibu’s biggest neighborhood.

The triathlon blocks 3 of the 4 access streets to the area surrounding Malibu High.

The only open street … Bonsall Drive … is too dangerous to turn left onto P C H during normal times.

Sheriff’s deputies are supposed to allow left turns under traffic control during the triathlon.

That didn’t happen early Saturday morning …. it was right turn only .. as traffic control officers directed motorists to drive west thru the triathlon and make a U-turn a mile up the coast … at Trancas.

Traffic lanes were also blocked by parked cars … particularly along Morning View Drive.

A man fell into the Pacific Ocean near Point Mugu rock Friday … and although a team of people went into the churning ocean to rescue him …. the man died at a hospital.

The Ventura County Star reports that the man fell in at 10:30 Friday morning at Mugu Rock.

Crews from the Ventura County Fire Department … the Oxnard Fire Department … state park lifeguards and the U.S. Coast Guard also arrived to assist.

The victim was taken to Channel Islands Harbor by a Coast Guard boat … unconscious and with CPR being administered … according to the Ventura County Star.

He died at the hospital.

Surf conditions were severe.

At least 17 people have been killed by Hurricane Florence on the East Coast.

Why is this on the local news in Malibu ???

Three of those fatalities … caused by generators.

Two people killed by fumes …. as they ran a generator in a house.

A third … killed as he plugged into ta generator … possibly in wet conditions.

Southern California Edison has suggested that Malibu residents buy generators … because the company plans to kill electric service during windstorms.

And while hurricane conditions are different than a dry Santa Ana … the dangers presented by running generators in strong … dry winds are evident.

Running a hot generator outdoors can cause fires … if something lands on it…

Refueling a hot generator while its running can easily cause a flashover fire.

Storing gasoline for an approaching blackout raises its own set of risks.

Those issues come into play as the the Southern California Edison company plans blackouts in high winds in Malibu.

The relatives risks .,.. between using generators or the 10 percent of wildfires that are caused by power lines .. simply have not been studied.

At city hall tonight … a bunch of routine homebuilding permit requests goes before th Maoibu Planning Commission tonight.

A time extension for a project that is already in plan check at 25321 Malibu Road.

A request for more time to build a house due to family matters   at 24840 PCH.

A new mansion at 23741 Harbor Vista has drawn opposition from five neighbors … up in the Malibu Knolls subdivision.

They are opposed to a fire pit …. but the city says a natural gas-fueled fire pit is not a fire danger.

One bedroom was converted to an art studio by removing a door to a bathroom.

From the KBUU sports desk… the Malibu high school girls volleyball team lost last week to Nordhoff.

25-11, 25-7, 25-6 were the sets.

They play tomorrow evening at Fillmore.

Last Friday … the boys football team was up 17 to nothing against Hueneme high school at one point Friday.

But they were stunned.

Hueneme got 41 unanswered points and ended up winning 41 to 17.

The high school boys are now four and one on the season … and oh and one in division play in the new citrus Coast league standings.
