Records were set in the region yesterday … the hottest November 11th ever in many places near us.

And it might get hotter today.

No official hottest day records are kept in Malibu.

But this morning’s overnight low at Latigo Shores …. 85 degrees at 4:30 … is the hottest overnight Malibu temperature we’ve seen in seven years fo tracking this.
The strongest wind gusts were at about 6pm Thursday at most stations.
The overnight low at Latigo Shore was 85 degrees, and at 4:30am it is 83 degrees there.
Peak winds:
Boney Mtn – 38 mph
Upper Decker Cyn – 49
Leo Carrillo – 28
Trancas – 25
Escondido Cyn – 41
Upper Latigo Cyn – 32
Latigo Shore – 41
Upper Las Flores – 42

Santa Ana winds continue tis morning.

Hot and dry conditions will continue across the area. A slow cooling trend will
begin over the weekend as offshore flow weakens, but well above normal temperatures are expected into early next week.
For today…. less wind … but 3 to 6 degrees warmer in Malibu.

A car hits a power pole.

A fire breaks out.

That was the situation facing Sam Bassett .. a Malibu man who runs a pool cleaning service … yesterday.

The dangerous situation was on Mulholland Highway … just east of the Old Place restaurant in Cornell.

A car had gone into a power pole … the driver stuck inside as passersby yelled to stay put … the risk was that the driver would be electrocuted upon exit.

Live wires had fallen onto the roadway and the brush.

Witnesses report that Basset put out the burning bushes next to the road ..

Malibu is moving.

New redistricting maps have been produced by an independent commission.

And the proposal would cut Malibu out of the Congressional District currently held by Ted Lieu.

Malibu and the northern part of Santa Monica would be shifted into a district dominated by the western San Fernando Valley.

Politically … that is one of the most-conservative parts of Los Angeles.

For the state Senate … the proposal would cut out the big chunk of the San Fernando Valley that we are now in … and put Malibu into a district that includes Agoura Hills … Calabasas … Santa Monica … LA’s Westwood area … and Beverly Hills.

Big changes also proposed for the state Assembly district that Malibu is now in

The commission proposes to move Malibu out of the current state Assembly district … which includes Santa Monica … and shifted us into a district that includes Calabasas … Agoura Hills and stretches up into Simi Valley.

That’s much more Republican in voter registration.

All of this could have profound changes in the way Malibu is represented in Sacramento and in Congress.

These maps are proposals … they have a long way to go through the political sausage mill.

For example … the shift of one boundary in the Bay Area could shuffle boundary lines around all the way to Mexico.

It took weeks of long, late-night meetings full of wonky debate and digital line drawing.

These preliminary maps are far from perfect … says the commisioners drawing them.

At least four public input meetings and 14 line-drawing sessions are scheduled for December.

The deadline to redraw California is December 27th.

There is an interactive map on the Internet that shows you the existing political boundaries … you can see it at https://www.wedrawthelinesca.org/map_viewer

The Malibu Half marathon arrives at Zuma Beach this weekend.

Traffic wil be restricted a bit on Sunday … nothing like the much larger Triathlon.

More on the traffic in a second.

The Half marathon is a local affair … put on by a local women … with a significant charity benefit to the Malibu Boys and Girls Club.

And its footprint is much smaller.

There is a 5k Run and walk … Saturday morning at 8.

That will be entirely within the Zuma Beach parking lot.

Sunday morning … there’s a half marathon that starts at Zuma and heads west to Leo Carrillo Beach.

Broad Beach Road will be blocked for a few minutes … both at Trancas and a mile west at West Broad beach.

But that will only be for a few minutes as the lead pack runs by.

Sheriff’s deputies will let traffic through the gaps.

Only one lane of PCH will be blocked … this is not like the Traithlon.

The entire out and back race will be on the ocean side of the highway.

Trancas Canyon will not be closed.

And that is Sunday morning only.

There is a beer garden near the finish line … Sunday morning between 8:00 am and 11:30.

Beer is 5 dollars and 100 percent goes to the Boys & Girls Club of Malibu.

On Sunday afternoon … the annual Emily Shane Foundation Butterfly Magic Fundraiser is at the big lawn at Pepperdine University from 2 to 5.

For a 10 dollar suggested donation … participants can sponsor a butterfly … to bereleased by butterfly wranglers at the park.

There will be a kids activity table, food trucks, a silent auction, magic show and, of course, the butterfly release.

Also … musical performances from the Malibu Middle/High school orchestra and choir, acclaimed jazz composer Les Sabler, and musicians Robin Hild and Perry Gentile.

Totally free to attend… butterfly sponsorships are a suggested 10 dollar donation.

Al proceeds go the the Emily Shane Foundations’ mentoring mentoring and tutoring program for struggling middle school students across Los Angeles and Ventura counties.

And today is the final day to take the survey on what your vision of the Malibu school district should look like.

It’s part of the Malibu effort to split out of the Santa Monica school district.

City officials are going to present a positive picture to the L A County Office of Edudcaiton Committee.

They need to show that Malibu has community consensus and plans for any seaprate school district.

Focus groups were convened this week … in various contingencies like parents who have pulled their kids out of the district.

Also … the business community … children with special needs … and teachers.

Today is the deadline …. the survey is at the city’s website.
