Written by on September 21, 2018

This is KBUU News – the headlines:

  • = Caltrans has ignored a landslide creeping onto PCH for 60 years … and that will cost them.
  • = The city council sets aside time to talk about filing a lawsuit … actually … two lawsuits.
  • = Malibu was first … now the state of California takes baby steps towards a plastic straw ban.
  • = 14 years after voters approved it .. construction starts on a 50 million dollar community college branch in Malibu.

This is Malibu’s only local daily news. It’s the Friday edition of the news … from Radio Malibu  …. F-M 99 point 1 K B U U. Good morning … I’m Hans Laetz reporting.

A landslide that has been creeping onto P C H in Pacific Palisades for 60 years has just cost Caltrans and the City of Los Angeles 9 point 1 million dollars. Details: https://www.radiomalibu.net/pch-landslide-costs-big/

LA Times article: http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-bicyclist-lawsuit-pch-20180920-story.html

Malibu’s city council has set aside some time at its next meeting …. to talk about filing lawsuits. Two lawsuits … to be precise. Against whom? We speculate: https://www.radiomalibu.net/malibu-may-file-two-lawsuits/

In other Malibu news:

Call it a baby step that started in Malibu.

California Governor Jerry Brown has signed a bill that will require restaurants to hand out straws only to people who ask for them.

California is the first state to prohibit full-service restaurants from automatically giving out single-use plastic straws.

Says the governor in his signing statement … and we quote …

“Plastic has helped advance innovation in our society, but our infatuation with single user convenience has led to disastrous consequences,” Brown wrote in a signing message.

Malibu was one of the very first governments in the world to ban plastic straws.

Although the state law seems rather weak by comparison … its backers call it a first step.

Volunteers who want to become docents for Malibu Creek State Park are being recruited.

Training classes will begin Sun. Oct. 7 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Six weekends of training.

The volunteers help park visitors with information; staff the visitor center; conduct nature hikes; guide walks; assist with campfire programs, and schedule school hikes.’

There’s more information at the California State Parks Malibu Creek page on the internet.

And … a huge civic event today at 11 … at the old Malibu Civic Center.

Groundbreaking for the 50 million dollar Malibu branch campus of Santa Monica College.

This is 14 years after the bond issue to build it was approved by voters.

The three-acre campus  will include a two-story educational building with dedicated labs for science and art.

A multipurpose physical activity space.

A 100-seat lecture hall with raked seating.

A computer lab, and two general education classrooms.

And it being Malibu … the complex will meet the city’s “dark skies” standards and also provide space for an interpretive center to support Malibu’s unique culture and history.

A one-story wing of the structure will house the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s substation, with the multi-purpose room doubling as an Emergency Operations Center.

It will replace the old sheriff’s substation … and when finished .. this will be the first time since the early 1990s that Malibu has had a police substation within city limits.

The campus is expected to open in 2022—with an estimated total cost of $50 million.

The campus will be next door to the Malibu Public Pibrary.

The next question … what will the state do with the abandoned courthouse.

It’s been closed for 5 years now … leaving a gaping hole in the heart of the Malibu Civic Center.

At one time … Santa Monic College offered a full program of about 70 general education classes at Malibu High School and other SMMUSD campuses.

But that became impractical … a new campus was promised 14 years ago .. and today construction actually begins.

There ceremony is at 11 at the Civic Center.
