The Malibu city council last night was split on how it should address lessons learned from the fire.

The city council is setting up a two person city council committee to recommend changes to city policies and procedures.

Incumbent councilman Rick Mullen and Skyler Peak have been on that committee for the past month … and they wanted to continue that task.

But newly elected city council member is Karen Ferrer and Mikke Pierson put their names forward … and said they wanted to take over the task.

Farrar and Pierson said it’s important that fresh eyes … not associated with past City policy making … would be important to many residents in Malibu.

Neither faction yielded to the other during a polite standoff at the city Council meeting.

It came to Mayer Jefferson Wagner to make a decision …

And decided to go with the fresh eyes … rather than Mullen and Peak.

It should be noted that Wagner Mullen and Peak. ran as a slate during the city Council election two years ago.

The discussion was quite collegial and polite … but it is safe to say that political observers eyebrows arched up for that city council drama.

Malibu city council members have announced their appointments to city commissions.

At last night’s city council meeting … Kraig Hill and Jeff Jennings were appointed to the Planning Commission.

Hill is a Big Rock Mesa resident … appointed by Mikke Pierson.

Hill has appeared before the Planning Commission occasionally bringing a scientific viewpoint to the discussions.

Jennings … appointed by Karen Farrer … served the past term on the Planning Commission … and before that served two terms on the Malibu city council.

Chris Frost was reappointed to the Public Safety Commission … as was KBUU radio station operator Hans Laetz.

And Hamish Patterson was appointed by fellow surfer Skylar Peak … to sit on the Parks Commission.

Other appointments were made …. they will be posted at the KBUU Newswire.
