Malibu’s Only Local Daily News … from Radio Malibu  …. F-M 99 point 1 K B U U. Good morning … I’m Hans Laetz reporting.

Winds of up to 64 miles per hour have hit the Santa Monica Mountains … 48 miles an hour down here in Malibu.

And the wind chill factor at 7 this morning … at the malibu Creek campground … was 28 degrees.

That’s what 41 mile an hour winds and 41 degrees gets you.

A strong wind storm us pushing air through the mountains … but this is a cold … dry storm.

All roads open.

No accidental power outages reported by SCE.

No intentional blackouts announced by SCE.

No fire dispatches in Malibu overnight.

Winds will continue this morning … this afternoon … tonight and tomorrow.

And it is going to be cold.

Overnight lows in the 20s are forecast for tonight in the Santa Monica Mountains.

Areas of frost are possible … particularly in areas that are sheltered from the wind.

But … there is a possibility of a Santa Ana wind tonight – if not it will be very cold.

Peak wind gusts as of 5 a-m:

Lower Decker Cyn 39

Leo Carrillo Beach 33

KBUU Trancas 32

Point Dume  19

Ramirez Cyn 47

Above Paradise Cove 46

Big Rock 27

Saddle Peak 54

Last weekend again saw Porsches racing on PCH.

Rice rockets peeling out at traffic signals.

Motorcyclists popping wheelies … and passing cars on the shoulder.

There was a special C H P and LA County sheriff’s department enforcement effort up in the Santa Monica Mountains … as well.

One motorcycle cop caught a Porsche driver doing 98 miles per hour on Kanan Dume Road.

Malibu seems caught in a conundrum … with many drivers saying that the hammer needs to come down on speed enforcement.

But many of the same voices say … just not on them.

Workers in moonsuits.

That’s what city officials say they expect to see in the rocks and on the side of P C H at Las Tunas Beach … on the city’s east end.

Human waste … toilet paper and other garbage has been reported below the roughly 30 or so RVs and campers that have clustered along the oceanfront property for several months.

Last December … L A County posted no parking signs for 2 overnight hours at the encampment at Topanga Beach.

Residents there complained of sewage dumping  … prostitution … drug dealing and other problems.

Predictably … three dozen RVs and campers moved a mile up the ocast to Las Tunas Beach.

The pollution and complaints followed.

Now … the City of Malibu is asking state and county agencies to clean up trash at Las Tunas Beach, and the 35 or so campers there faced a deadline last night to find another place.

City manager Reva Feldman says the city requested the cleanup, which will be done by workers from the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors.

Caltrans officials posted no parking signs there Friday afternoon.

It is not clear if there will be any social workers or others at the campground to guide the 50 or 60 persons believed to reside there, or if there will be any incentive for them to park outside Malibu.

It appears that some of them have moved further up the coast in Malibu … to Corral Beach and Zuma Beach.

The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District is broke.

It has run a deficit for 10 years.

And while voters have approved bond issues for construction …

that money cannot be used for day to day operations.

And the state’s complicated school funding formula is causing most school districts to run short.

That’s the message from school superintendent Ben Drati … sent in a letter to parents last Friday.

Complicating the issue is that the local district has told Sacramento it will survive on local property tax revenues … instead of state funding per pupil.

That calculated risk means the local district will not be in line for extra money from Governor Gavin Newsom’s state budget.

Drati is again warning that the district must take a hard look at our expenditures … and as he puts it …  realign spending in terms of what revenue is coming in.

Drati has appointed a Superintendent’s Budget Advisory Committee to ask community stakeholders where to cut.

The first of six planned meetings will take place Wednesday.

We’ll see what happens.

A controversial methane-powered electric generating station just up the coast from Malibu may get a new three year lease on life.

The two gas-powered turbines 15 miles west of Trancas  … at Ormond beach … are the largest single point source of air pollution in the Malibu area.

They also use ocean water for cooling … killing billions of fish eggs and small marine creatures every year.

The state water board had ordered the power plant at Ormond Beach to be shut down now.

But different state agencies are confused as to whether this is possible.

The California Public Utilities Commission is worried that the state will have enough power at night … when most solar plants are inactive.

The small company that owns Ormond Beach has been spun off from the big corporations that used to own it … and there is no money to tear down the oceanfront hulk next to the Navy base.

According to the Ventura County Star … the owner proposes to keep the 1970s-era facility will continue operating through 2023.

In exchange … the owner Gen On will make a little money .. and set aside revenue to pay for demolition … which has a price tag of approximately $25 million.

Meanwhile …. smog and electricity will continue for another two years.

The agreement was reluctantly approved by the Oxnard City Council last week.

It still needs approval from several state agencies.

This story is based on reporting in the Ventura County Star.

Finally this morning … a taste of middle America has just opened just up the coast from Malibu.

Cracker Barrel has opened in Camarillo.

It’s the company’s 663rd location … they are in 45 states.

There was a big ribbon cutting ceremony last weekend … hosted by the Camarillo Chamber of Commerce.

The restaurant opened to the public this morning at 6.

It’s across the street from a giant convention center and hotel … under construction at the interchange of the 101 Freeway at Las Posas Road.

On the menu … grits … gravy … southern fried steak.

An occasional salad.

And in the adjacent store … treats from the south … including Cheerwine and Goo Goo Clusters.

20 miles up from Malibu.

Yum.
